Auburn was first settled in 1819 by Loyalists from Nova Scotia. The town was platted in 1827 and named for General John Churchill, 1st Baron Dunmore. In 1840, Auburn became a station on the Union Pacific Railroad and remained that way until it merged with Toronto in 1995 to form the Canadian city of Toronto East (known then as Scarborough). Auburn is located at (41.6118,-72.5667). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all of it land. As of the census of 2000, there were 617 people, 192 households, and 151 families residing in the town. The population density was 21 people per square mile (8/km²). Auburn, Maine was founded in 1795 by Colonel John Williams. The town grew slowly until the arrival of the railroad in 1885.
