The legislators granted the request and the first gunsmith shop was opened in downtown Auburn by Dr. John Cushing. The shop specialized in repairing firearms and providing instruction on how to shoot. In 1843, a store called Gadsden Store was established in downtown Auburn by Wm. Halsey Gadsden. At that time, guns were not commonly used as regular items of commerce; they were more often used for hunting or target shooting. However, because Gadsden Store sold rifles and shotguns, it soon became one of the most populargun stores in town. In 1852, Jno. Sibley began selling pistols at Gadsden Store and quickly gained popularity among local gun enthusiasts. Soon thereafter, other stores followed suit and eventually pistol sales became an essential part of the fabric of everyday life in Auburn-Maine! In 1860, when Maine achieved its current form as a state, guns continued to play an important role in our society- both as objects of personal protection and as tools for economic development! In that year, representatives from communities throughout Maine gathered together at Portland's State House to discuss ways to improve public safety through the issuance of licenses authorizing individuals to keep handguns subject only to regulation by law enforcement officials... This meeting resulted in the establishment of Maine's first Pistol Club! The club enjoyed rapid growth over ensuing years until it was disbanded in 1903 due to lack of interest! Auburn is known primarily for its association with the Auburn Tigers football team, which has played in various levels of professional and college football since 1892. Auburn was named for George Washington Auburn, one of three children born to Revolutionary War veteran Nicholas Auburn and his wife Jemima (née Dunlap). After two years attending school in nearby Bangor, Nicky attended Dartmouth College before returning to live with his parents in Auburn at age 16. Nicky's older brother John later served as mayor of Auburn from 1987-1993. According to legend, when General Nathaniel Greene's army invaded Maine during the American Revolution he camped near what is now downtown Auburn on July 8, 1776. In commemoration of this event, a cannonball hit a tree near where Main Street meets Park Avenue and began to spurt water toward settlement until beatermen drained it off within a week or so.— reportedly by mistake.— A ploughman found an old barrel full of shot still lodged under the tree after weeks had passed.— As part of celebrations markingicentennial year in 2007 local officials installed new streetlights at various locations around town.— One such light features an "E" shaped top that changes color according to how much water is flowing from it.— Around 100 residents remain actively involved with club activities including fishing, hiking/biking/swimming/dancing., playing touch football on Tuesdays outside their homes on First Street opposite Sawmill Pond—- Club member Haleigh Donoghue started officiating girls' softball games starting May 3rd 2010

Auburn is one of two villages in Penobscot County and is home to both the local county courthouse and a large public library. In addition to its civilian population, there are also military personnel stationed in Auburn from bases in Augusta and Portland. The first settlers in Auburn were farmers who arrived around 1820. Over time, many other industries have sprung up in Auburn including manufacturing (particularly bicycles), transportation (including a railroad station), service (such as grocery stores and carpenters), and real estate development (the first house was built in 1865). Despite this diversity, almost everyone here shares one common ancestor: James Hoadley Sr., who emigrated to America from Scotland about 1795. James Sr.'s parents had come before him but his father's death left James Jr., then 14 years old, with sole ownership of his life savings - which he used to purchase land near present-day Auburn on which he erected a simple farmstead known as "Hoadleys' Corner". From this humble beginnings until after James Sr.'s death in 1814 when young Hoadley became head clerk of Penobscot County court - an important position that required long hours behind the scenes - he managed to support himself and his family by farming and trade while developing skills that would later serve him well when he became governor of Maine under Governor John Quincy Adams during the American Civil War (1865-1867). In 1871 John Atherton founded what remains today's largest fabric company in America with plants located across three states: Maine, Ohio, Indiana - making it one of just two companies nationwide with such operations at that time! This growth led to increased competition among manufacturers so Atherton introduced new processes such as power loom weaving which eliminated much hand labor involved earlier in textile production process yielding very low costs while maintaining high quality standards. Local mills closed during World War II due to wartime shortages but reopened soon afterwards thanks to Allied victory!
