Auburn, Maine is a town in eastern Maine. The population was 5,362 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cumberland County. The name Auburn comes from "auberge" which means "a place where one can spend the night." The first white person to live in Auburn was Edwin Dickey who settled here in 1814. He built a cabin on the east side of town and named it after his brother-in-law, Ebenezer Dickey, also a settler in nearby Bangor. In 1827, Alfred Sibley set up shop here as the first blacksmith in what would become Cumberland County. A few years later, he opened a general store and livery stable that became an important local landmark. In 1845, John Fenton purchased land adjacent to present day Auburn from Isaac Morse for $1,000 cash. He started farming there and naming his new farm "Fenton's Prairie". By 1850, he had acquired other land within present day Cumberland County as well and renamed his farm "Auburn." In 1873–74, he added another piece of property to his holdings when he donated land for a school system in present day Cumberland County which would later be renamed State University of Maine (SU). The population of Auburn, Maine as of the 2010 census was 1,584. Auburn has a rich history dating back to when it was first settled by men from what is now Alabama. They were looking for land that would offer them protection from Indian attacks. In 1799, Arthur Post traveled through Auburn and saw an ample amount of white man’s property that he decided to purchase from the local Native Americans. The Post family operated a mercantile business in Auburn for many years before selling it to John Day in 1824. On July 4th, 1825, General James Ketchum awarded postmaster Daniel Webster with a grant for 500 acres near present day Auburn on which to build his plantation called Mount Desert Island. This gave Auburn its first permanent settler – Mr. Webster – and started the town's growth! In 1860, while still part of Massachusetts, Auburn voted to become an independent municipality under the name “Auburn” after its founder’s mother who had died young while living among her people on Mount Desert Island during their original founding year! As time passed and other towns within the state gained independence (e.g., Grafton), so did Auburndale; however, until 1934 there was no mention made about Auburndale joining any other incorporated city or town within Maine! In 1951 referenda were held throughout Mainland America asking citizens if they wanted new municipal boundaries drawn up incorporating communities located east of Interstate 95 between Portland and Bangor into one city/town; however due to lack of response both cities/towns continued as separate entities until 1954 when they both merged into one Municipality under the leadership of Mayor Harry Holmes!
