In his journal for February 17, 1822, Smith wrote "the river running through this village has been used as a hunting ground by our forefathers." He also noted that "a large pond" existed near present day Main Street south of downtown and east of Interstate 95. Captain John Smith's Expedition set out from Bangor on February 2, 1825 with 5 men including Major James Conte and Lieutenant Samuel Parker to exploration what would become Penobscot County - 3 days later they reached their destination at the mouth of Nowakon Pond where they built a small fortification known as Fort William (now just east of Main Street). The fort served as a trading post between British colonies in Canada and Acadia (now Nova Scotia). It was not until after American Revolutionary War when English troops began invading Acadia that Patriot General Benedict Arnold arrived at Fort William early July 4th with 1,500 troops seeking refuge from British forces outside Boston which had burned down part of their city during the Siege of Boston on Memorial Day,.
