Auburn's economy changed when two companies merged in 1955: A&W Brewery (later known as Anheuser Busch) and Penobscot Brewing Company (now Bangor Brew Works). Penobscot now makes most of the beer sold in Auburn while A&W produces only soft drinks there.

Auburn, Maine is a small town in the towns of Auburn and Lisbon in Cumberland County, Maine. The population was 602 at the 2000 census. The first permanent settler in what is now Auburn was Jonas Allen, who built a cabin on the east side of Sebago Lake in 1824. In 1827, he married Sarah Yates. From then until 1840, all of the land south of Birch Creek was owned by John Putnam and his family. It wasn't until 1851 that Andrew Morse bought 2/3 of the township from Putnam for $1 per acre. A year later, Morse married Jane Putnam and took control of the Township government. By 1860, there were only 10 residents living in Auburn proper; however, it grew rapidly during this time as more and more people moved into town to take advantage of its fertile soil and easy access to resources such as water power and lumber. In 1870-71 (the year before annexation), Albion Lumber Company erected an artificial hill (now known as Mount Hope Cemetery) on Sebago Lake to provide better access to lumber mills in nearby Portland. This event helped stimulate development within town boundaries and eventually led to its incorporation as a borough on March 11th, 1912 under the name "Auburn" by Act No 892 (Cumberland County). At that time it had a population of just over 100 people but has grown progressively larger ever since with over 1,100 present today! The growth within town limits has also paralleled that for general aviation: beginning with Auburn's establishment as an airport on December 17th, 1931 (a few months after New York City's JFK Airport opened!), flights into Bangor were common throughout much of Maine due to its proximity to both cities! Today still one mainstay within town are our unique local businesses - many which have been around since before even municipal incorporation! Some notable examples include Pioneer Hardware & Smithy which dates back to 1896 while Bigelow’s Ice Cream can be found upriver at Eastown Dam; while locally beloved restaurants like The Bunny Hut serve up delicious Americanized food right inside our doors!
