The community had its start when two steamboats carrying goods between Boston and Montreal collided near what is now downtown Auburn on October 14, 1845. The accident created an opening for someone to build a dock so that boats could stop for repairs or refueling. This became an important commercial center due to its close proximity to the port at Portland, Maine which allowed goods from all over America to be transported through Auburn's harbor. AUBURN'S INDUSTRY TODAY In 1850-1851, architect James Moffat designed the first brick structure in Auburn and built it as part of a pattern he had developed for towns across New England called "MODERN architecture." This style emphasized symmetrical lines, plain surfaces with no ornamentation, and brick vaults with intricate rooflines. In 1852-1853 he also built a schoolhouse (now known as First Congregational Church) and a store/cabins around what are now Main Street and Park Avenue. He continued working in this style until his death in 1881. Because of this popular style, many modern buildings were designed by architects following MODERN principles during the late 19th century such as those erected by Jethro Tull at Round Hill Village (1911), if you go down Main Street towards NW corner there is another building called Auld Place which housed various shops before being shuttered about 1955 !"

Auburn, Maine was founded in 1820 by Capt. John Davenport and his family as a small town on the northeastern shore of Lake Winnipesaukee. The area now includes Auburn, Manchester and Easton townships. In 1824, Capt. Davenport erected a small log cabin at the junction of the Winnipesaukee River and Round Lake. He named his settlement after Auburn University, England, where he had been educated before becoming a captain in the U.S. Navy. The first school in Auburn was opened in 1827 by Rev. John Fenton. A Methodist church was built in 1830, followed by a Baptist church in 1840; both churches were later combined into one organization known as First Methodist Church of Auburn Incorporated (FMC). In 1865, local farmers organized what became known as the "Auburn Masons" Lodge No. 1 to provide social activities for their community during its early years of growth; this lodge continues to be active today with members living throughout central New England In 1886, James Crouse moved from Greenfield to take up residence near downtown Auburn and began developing what is now called the Crouse-Crouse Residence District which includes much of downtown along with several smaller neighborhoods including North Park and South Park squares In 1925, King Cotton's Plantation was destroyed by fire and caused widespread damage across southeastern New England A total of thirteen homes were lost in that fire but most importantly three enslaved women who were living there perished as well The entire plantation - including all slaves - lay completely burned down not long after it happened but due to public outcry many efforts were made to rebuild or at least save many of the structures which have since been restored or added to other properties within city boundaries finally on October 3rd 1927 when it rained again some people decided go explore what started off as just an open field turned into quite possibly one of worst fires ever seen when they found twenty five thousand pieces human flesh fifty four barrels oil drums pile high
