Auburn, Maine is a town in Penobscot County, Maine, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bangor-Biloxi metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Auburn was Captain John Putnam who arrived in 1795. He built a small cabin on the Kennebec River and named it "Putnam's Fort." In 1802, Captain Nathaniel Bangs set up a trading post at what is now Auburn Landing on the river. In 1810, he married Sarah Merrill and rechristened his settlement "Auburn". By 1820, many people had moved to Auburn from various parts of Maine because of improved transportation opportunities made available by the Erie Canal which had been completed that year. In 1824, Jabez Fullerton erected an adobe building which served as the town's first courthouse and jail until it burned down in 1840. The first school was established in 1825 by Reverend James Giddings with $203 from local citizens. The town received its present name of Auburn after General Robert Ewing decided to place military forces near its location for strategic purposes during the Mexican–American War (1846-48). General Ewing donated land for a new courthouse and square which were dedicated on September 15th, 1850. During Reconstruction period (1868-1912), Auburn experienced significant growth due to cheap labor available through white labor gangs operating around Bangor and neighboring towns such as Winthrop and Saco. White farmers began moving into town after they acquired property along Route 2 east of downtown Bangor for development into large plantations known as "the Pines". Thereafter several businesses operated within downtown Auburn; among them were J & M Tanner Hardware (1901), Jenson's Drug Store (1905), Fuller's Barber Shop (1920),Providence Mutual Insurance Company Building (1927) and Post Office Department Annex/Atrium/Hallmark Store/Eagle Eye Optical / Optical Supply store(1978). In 1933-34 when local residents Boynton Beach Cement Company president Floyd Hoey planned to move his plant from Dunkirk to Hammondsport due to high demand for Portland cement products resulting from World War II shortages caused by European import restrictions BAE Systems plc., owner of Portland Brick Works located three miles south of the city limits announced plans to build an 8 million dollar plant northeast of Kellington with employment over 200 people Initially only 30 workers would be hired but with increased production rates 400 workers may have been employed across 4 shifts daily when construction began later that year plans called for operation until 1984 employing 3000-4000 people annually Garment production also increased during this time with output increasing tenfold having plants at Hammondsport (1985) An amphibian farm located adjacent to Kellington Airport started commercial operations providing eggs each week beginning May 9th1977 selling 20 laying hens per package
