Zachary is a small town in the parish of Orleans in central Louisiana, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Baton Rouge Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was named for General Zacharias Cajun French who fought in the American Revolutionary War and also served as governor of what is now Orleans Parish from 1794 to 1800. The first settler in Zachary was John Fournier who erected a cabin on a bluff overlooking the current town site about 1814-1815. A few years later, Pierre Thibodeau founded the village of Saint-Clair-de-Luzou on land he bought from Fournier. In 1825, François Lafitte built his fort at Pointe du Hoc and began trading with Native Americans here. In 1827, Frenchman Jules Chouteaux sold 60 acres (24 hectares) near present day Zachary to Thomasville resident Isaac Prentiss for $100 Confederate money which he had secretly taken from Union army soldiers during the Civil War. Prentiss used this new land to build two churches – one known as St. John’s Episcopal Church and another called Immaculate Conception Catholic Church – and establish a mill that powered Village Hall and other early civic buildings. By 1830, Zachary had over 100 residents and several stores including one operated by banjo player Lafayette “Papa” Graves; local boys would help him store goods when not playing music in downtown streetside saloons or working on his farm across the street from post office). However, economic hardships sustained by low prices for crops oilseed cotton and lack of available transportation doomed many small towns throughout America during this time period due to factors such as advances in transportation methods like railroadroads etc., while rural areas continued to thrive thanks to cheap labor supplied by immigrants coming through Ellis Island such as Poles and Czechs
