It is part of the New Orleans–Metairie−Bossier City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area now known as Zachary was settled by French colonists in 1718. The first permanent European settlers were those from Acadia who established a trading post on the Ouachita River in 1722. In 1803, following the end of the American Revolutionary War, most of what is now Jefferson Parish became part of Louisiana Territory under President James K. Polk. In 1836, Zachary incorporated as a town and remained so until it amalgamated with other towns in Jefferson Parish in 1959 to form New Orleans–Metairie-Bossier City (MSA). Zachary first came into contact with white people through ranching and hunting operations conducted by French Canadian fur traders and their Métis allies during the early 1800s. By 1810, about 60% of the contemporary town's residents were French Canadians; 10% were Englishmen or Americans who had migrated to Louisiana during or after the war; 10% were slaves; and 10% were Native Americans— primarily Cherokee and Choctaw people—who had been brought over by Spanish colonists for labor on sugar plantations near Baton Rouge. In 1865, when Confederate General Robert E Lee invaded Mississippi to gain control of that state before its secession from the Union, he stopped at Quitman County on his way north to join Confederate forces at Baton Rouge. A contingent of Union soldiers camped near today's Zachary on July 4th 1865 while they awaited orders from higher up not to move forward without authorization given that Confederate troops might enter Mobile County soon thereafter—an event which never happened due to Union cavalry Lt. Gen David Butler's preemptive strike against Confederate forces nearby at Steele’s Ford that evening failed to materialize). When New Orleans was captured by Union forces on April 9th 1870 during an unsuccessful attempt to retake it from Confederates under Lt.-Gen Ulysses S Grant, many resident families moved into downtown New Orleans where they could begin rebuilding efforts after being smashed below market prices for goods looted from southern cities such as Atlanta and Nashville during Reconstruction preceding this event.
