Zachary is a town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 1,869 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Orleans–Metairie–Bogalusa Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Zachary was Samson French on March 10, 1811. Zachary was founded by Captain John Bourgues and his family on December 4, 1825. In 1860, James Fenton purchased the town from Captain Bourgues for $1,000 cash and 100 acres (40 ha). Fenton renamed it after himself – Zachary (a portmanteau of "John" and "Samson"). In 1865-1866, Confederate General Albert Sidney Johnston's army passed through Zachary as it moved from Baton Rouge to Covington Parish in search of supplies. General Johnston ordered all male citizens over age 15 to leave their homes within one day; many did so voluntarily but some chose to resist because they were afraid of being taken prisoner or worse. A number of plantations were destroyed during the war including Bourgues' estate which had been home to more than 400 slaves at the time of its purchase. Many African Americans relocated in response to Union military forces' marching into Jackson Parish under orders from Brigadier General Edwin Mudge – known as Emancipation Man – seeking freedom from slavery. Most chose not to move south and instead joined units under Lieutenant Colonel Don Carlos McCulloch moving north along I-10 towards Jackson Parish when military orders changed direction late on November 25th Abolitionists began protesting against slavery throughout much of Louisiana threatening violence if such operations continued unarmed like those taking place in neighboring Alabama where similar protests were ongoing without significant consequences until well into 1865 when Major John Brown & Co., aligned with Lincoln's Ulysses S Grant arrived in Arkansas Territory just prior to Appomattox Court House giving an initial victory for Union forces followed by several months of guerrilla warfare as blacks loyal to Confederates tried unsuccessfully to hold off Union advances across what became West Tennessee County before finally surrendering on April 9th 1865 surrounded by Union troops at Crossroads near present day Tellico Hills)
