Zachary is a small town in the Parish of Orleans in eastern Louisiana. It is the seat of government for Orleans Parish, and it is also home to most of the local school district. The population was 7,953 at the 2010 census. Zachary is located on a small river delta between Baton Rouge and New Orleans. The community was founded by Germans who came from Germany in 1804 and named it Goslar after their ancestral home in that country. The first post office was established in Zachary on July 26, 1868, and the first store opened there on December 3, 1869. After Wilson announced his plan for general amnesty following these attacks, many whites decided to return to business as usual instead of joining up with Boudreaux's group. However, violence continued into 1916 and 1917; resulting in at least 21 deaths among African Americans across southeast Louisiana that year alone. This violence led more blacks to flee southward than ever before during Reconstruction – something that would continue until well after World War II had ended. In 1919–1920, Hurricane Hazel caused extensive damage throughout northeast Louisiana; including parts of zachary where trees were hit so hard by the storm that branches snapped and whole trees were uprooted; Power lines were downed along with numerous homes and businesses near both Baton Rouge and New Orleans . A combination grocery/ Hardware store/ bar / dance hall sat atop what used to be a cotton gin building which now serves as apartments since Katrina destroyed all but one wall - tenant friendly! That same year saw another big hurricane season when hurricanes Ernesto (a Category 5) & Wilma (a category 3) swept through much of Gulf Coast America leaving widespread destruction - again our good friends @ power company responded quickly(put out large area lights)and everyone returned backto normal within 24 hours
