Zachary, Louisiana is a town inJefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 9,898 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Jefferson Parish. Zachary was founded on December 12, 1812 by Captain John D'Arcy and his wife Catherine as a post office under the name "Hendricksville." The first settlers in what became Zachary were French Canadians who arrived in 1814. They built a cabin near present-day Main Street and named it after their leader, Jean Baptiste Lafitte. A schoolhouse and church were also built here at that time. In 1830, Captain John D'Arcy organized a group of men to build a road from Baton Rouge to New Orleans. The group's captain donated land for the road's construction and allocating $2 per acre to those who would maintain it. This road eventually became known as the Bankhead Road because early pioneers named it after Jno. Banks (later Sir John Bankhead). The first store opened in this area on October 15, 1832 by Captains Nolin & Robinson with goods brought overland from Baton Rouge via what is now called Stagecoach Road. On November 5, 1840 Zachary residents voted 3-to-1 in favor of secession from France because of concerns about an impending war between Britain and Spain over North America Some sources say that this vote may have been motivated by racism against African Americans at the time since most white people living in Zachary Township were farmers or plantation owners rather than slaveowners themselves
Zachary was founded in 1821 by Zachary and his wife, Hannah. The town grew slowly until the post-Civil War period when it exploded with population growth due to the entrepôt trade that took place there. By 1870, Zachary had a population of over 1,500 residents. It declined during the next decade as a result of natural disasters such as Hurricane Fayette in 1875 and a devastating flood in 1886 which destroyed many homes and businesses. However, by 1910 Zachary's population was back up to its early 1800s levels and had grown into a small city with over 10,000 people. The city experienced another growth spurt during World War II due to the influx of American soldiers stationed there. In 1945, after the war ended, Zachary's population peaked at 15,000 people again before declining slightly during the following decades while economic conditions deteriorated throughout most of Louisiana. However, since 2000 local efforts have started to revive the city and its economy by creating new businesses and increasing tourism opportunities
