Zachary is a town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 9,041 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Orleans metropolitan area. Zachary was founded by Frenchmen in 1819 as "Houma". In 1824, General Andrew Jackson's army discovered the bayou that would later become Zachary and named it for him. In 1840, the towns of Houma and Lafourche were merged to form Zachary. The name Houma was dropped from use in the 1930s because of its association with neighboring New Orleans. The original homes in Zachary were built along Bayou Teche which flows through town. One of the first businesses in town was a grocery store called Taylor & Sons on Bayou Teche Road which opened in 1868. After Hurricane Katrina struck on August 29, 2005, all but one business closed until January 1st 2006 when they reopened under new ownership with some changes including an additional grocery store and a small bank called First National Bank (now Bancorp). Prior to Katrina many residents used their homes as storage or evacuated during the storm while others set up camp outside of town due to lack of available facilities inside of town post-Katrina. Many people who lived close to Bayou Teche before Katrina started using their homes as shelters during and after hurricane based off supplies they had acquired from friends or family living elsewhere; this included many children who lost access to education or resources due to evacuation efforts within city limits prior to Katrina landfalling. As most people had no other recourse but to use their homes following hurricanes Harvey and Irma there has been some looting taking place among these displaced individuals although prosecutions have been made where necessary

Zachary is a small town located in the parish of Orleans in southeastern Louisiana. The population was 1,811 at the 2000 census. It is named after Zachary Kidd, a white American who settled here in 1821. Zachary began as a small frontier settlement, founded by French colonists in 1765. By 1800 it had a population of only 100 people. However, by 1830 it had doubled to 350 people and by 1850 it had reached 900 people. In 1871 the town became part of Jefferson Parish when that parish was created from parts of Bossier and Lafourche parishes. The first store in Zachary was built on the courthouse square in 1827 by James Cooks and his brother-in-law Solomon Lovell. The first post office was established here on July 15, 1829, by Jno. Aiken with Wm Browning as clerk. In 1830 Isaac Hinton opened an inn called The Gilded Cage which served as the nucleus for what would become Zaharias Hotel & Casino on Main Street today (originally known as The White Horse). In 1861 Confederate General Pemberton's cavalry moved onto Zachary plantation during their pursuit of Union General John Pope's army retreating from Baton Rouge to New Orleans across Iberia River. Pemberton's troopers set up camp nearby and used local plantations for food and shelter while they waited for news back home about the battle going well or bad; many residents turned out to see General Pemberton's march through their townsfolk unknown even to them throughout much of slave-holding Louisiana at this time Only one house remained standing in downtown Zachary after Hurricane Katrina destroyed most buildings there over two nights September 29 - October 2 2005; that building still stands vacant today next door to its original namesake hotel until recently when it too received damage from Katrina
