Zachary is a small town in the Parish of Orleans in central Louisiana. The population was 5,818 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Baton Rouge Metropolitan Statistical Area. Zachary has a rich history dating back to the early 1800s. The first settlers in Zachary were French colonists who arrived in 1769. They named their settlement after General John Forbes, who had led an expedition upriver from Mobile Bay to explore what would become Louisiana. The original inhabitants of Zachary were farmers and hunters who depended on hunting and fishing opportunities along the Mississippi River for their food supply. In 1804, a group of British investors purchased land near present-day Zachary from local farmers for $1,000 cash. The new owners began to build homes and develop the property into a village called North Garden Circle. By 1810, North Garden Circle had developed into what is now known as Zachary Village. The first school in Zachary was built in 1812 by Reverend Daniel Boone Sr., one of the founders of North Garden Circle. In 1814, Reverend Boone Jr., also one of founding fathers of North Garden Circle, donated land to build a school that would serve all residents of his village including those living outside its boundaries: “To these good people I give my lot next door which adjoins that on my own lot I have aforetime erected two very fine houses…I trust you will use them for your schools” (Fenton 9/27). In 1815, Reverend Boone Jr.'s donation was followed by donations from other villagers before finally being bought by Colonel Edward Hogg for $4,500 in 1830 (Lincoln 7/2). Hogg renamed it Hogg's Academy after himself and his son Colonel George Washington Hogg III (9/3). It became one of the first high schools in Louisiana (Goudreau 10/5). In 1860, when Vicksburg was threatened by Confederate forces under General Robert E Lee, many people fled New Orleans for what they thought would be safety but instead found themselves fighting alongside forces loyal to Confederate States President Jefferson Davis throughout much of 1862-1865 (Boyd 11/5-11/6; Goudreau 10/5; Lincoln 7/2; Boyd 11/(5)). Many soldiers from this time period also settled down around Zachary and started families there too (Fenton 9/27; Boyd 11/(5)). These soldiers helped contribute significantly to both economic development around town as well as social stability during difficult times (Goudreau 10/4-10/7). Thanks in part to these developments over time – such as joining with neighboring towns to form Baton Rouge Metropolitan Statistical Area – many businesses began opening up within downtown Zachary less than 25 years following its incorporation into government hands through Act No.: 114-A dated 3rd Feb 1944 (#0200) thereby diversifying commerce within our community (& surrounding areas) #zachARYHISTORY
