Zachary is a small town in the Louisiana Purchase area of the United States. It is located in Rapides Parish, approximately 20 miles (32 kilometers) south of Lafayette and 40 miles (64 kilometers) north of New Orleans. Zachary was founded by French colonists in 1799, although it has not been continuously inhabited since then. The population of Zachary was 792 as of 2010. The community first began to develop when white men arrived in the area in the early 1800s looking for land to purchase from Native Americans. These men were followed by Spanish and French settlers who also purchased land in the area. In 1812, General James Ketchum established a military post at what is now known as Zachary Square after finding gold near the square. This led to increased traffic and development around the square, which became one of the most important commercial areas in rural Rapides Parish during this time period. The town sprang up around this post and soon had a store, school, doctor, and other necessary services for its residents. By 1830, however, cotton prices had dropped so much that many residents decided to return home or move away from Zachary altogether. However, during Reconstruction Period (1865-1913), new migrants poured into southern Louisiana seeking work opportunities and landed here instead of moving back eastward as planned due to economic conditions there following Reconstruction laws which favored northern Democrats over southern Republicans. This influx further encouraged development around downtown Zachary Square until World War II when it all but disappeared due to growth elsewhere in Rapides Parish postwar at a rate faster than local incomes could support even with present-day infrastructure limitations such as few paved roads or no streetlights downtown). Today while some businesses have closed their doors due to lack of customers or competition from larger towns closer by,[1][2]Athletic Grounds Recreation Complex - where basketball games are played nightly throughout summer[3],[4],Stonington's general store - remains open year round serving both locals & visitors alike with groceries/merchandise/tickets/ snacks etc., giving life back some importance once again back on Main Street!
