Zachary was a small town in the parish of Ascension, Louisiana until it became a city in 1934. The town was located on Bayou Lafourche and was named for General Zachary Taylor. In 1827, the first white person to live in Zachary settled there with his family. The town developed around this early settlement and by 1830, there were three stores and four homes in the community. It is believed that the first school in Zachary was built in 1829. By 1831, Zachary had five stores and ten houses. A post office was established here in 1830 and by 1835, there were ten residents living here. In1834, General David Garrard founded the village of Thibodaux on large tracts of land east of Baton Rouge along Bayou Lafourche. He intended to create a small community as an entertainment stop for travelers passing through his territory while he explored new lands to the north and westward. After several months of development work at its new site, Garrard's village began to attract settlers from throughout Acadiana who journeyed downriver to trade goods with the Indian tribes living near Baton Rouge or ventured inland for hunting or fishing expeditions into what is now northeast Louisiana. By 1840, over 50 families had moved into Thibodaux from various surrounding settlements including Zachary which by then had grown to nearly 200 people within just 10 years since its establishment as a small Village on Bayou Lafourche - one of America’s earliest towns! With so many new arrivals came also some familiar faces: forces Majestic under General Andrew Jackson arrived at Thibodaux on July 7th 1840; John Sauer (1795-1886), owner/operator of “Sauer” Brewery & Market Place; Israel Goode (1799-1868), carpenter & mason; James Fitzgerald (1800-1872), farmer; Hiram Beal(?-1850?), planter/butcher; Emmeline Purdy (?-?, ?); Samuel Dorman(?-?, 1795-1871?), laborer & farmhand; George Henson(?-?, ?), self employed blacksmith who fabricated cannons for Union soldiers during the American Civil War before becoming an insurance agent after the war ended... all joining forces soon afterwards to form what would become known as "The Gullah Country" - home not only To African Americans but also To their descendants still living today among us! The Town Of Zachary Became A City On September 3rd 1934 From The merger Of 2 Villages - The Town Of Ascension And Thibodaux Zachary experienced rapid growth following its incorporation into city government thanks largely to investments made by Mayor Wanda Rousey both financially and socially – she promoted civic programming such as fireworks displays during summertimebecomingoneofthesthemostpopular eventsinthesouthwestcoastofLouisianaduringhertermasmayor.(1) As mayor Rousey championed knitting projects funded by her husband Mitch Rousey IV during her time as Parish Clerk she increasedultureandfestivalsinzacharywiththe eventualintentofrebuildingtheoldtownhallcompletedmorethan 20 Years later!
