Zachary is a small town in the parish of Jefferson in Lafourche County, Louisiana. The population was 1,682 at the 2010 census. The Zachary community was founded in 1824 by Abram and Eliza Pringle as "New Orleans". It was named for General Zachary Taylor, who had helped Defeat Mexico at Buena Vista Station. In 1846, New Orleans Mayor Jean Lafitte donated land to the village for a school and church; the first building was built on what is now Main Street. A post office was established in 1848, and the first school bell toller rung on September 15th that year. In 1850, Zachary's residents voted to become a part of the state of Louisiana. Zachary lost its status as an independent Village in 1865 when it merged with neighboring Prairie du Chien into the newly formed Parish of Jefferson. The Post Office closed in 1970 and all mail stopped being delivered to Zachary until 1984 when USPS reopened it under new management

Zachary, Louisiana is a small town located in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. It was named for General Zachary Taylor, who had been born there on December 12th, 1785. The town was originally called New Orleans and it changed its name to Zachary in 1814 because of the Battle of Gettysburg. The population of the town was about 4,500 when it post offices opened in 1877. By 1950 the population had dwindled to about 1,000 and by 2000 only 350 people lived there. The first settlers in Zachary were French Canadians who came from Montreal in the late 1800s. They built a log cabin on a bluff overlooking the Gulf of Mexico and started trading with locals and Indians. In 1902 they formed a company that bought 300 acres of land near what is now downtown Zachary. They laid out some streets, built homes, and began raising pigs and chickens for their own use as well as selling goods at local markets. At this time most people in Zachary were subsistence farmers who relied on natural resources such as salt water shrimp fishing or hunting rabbits for their food source supplementing their income with agriculture. When World War II began the Germans invaded France which created an opening for American forces to enter Europe through Normandy as part of Operation Overlord. On July 6th 1944 general Patton's thrust into Germany resulted in heavy fighting along Route 66 just outside of Zachary where many die including two brothers-in-law (and future governor) Bill Anderson and Myron Easley (the son of former president James Fenton). After days of fierce combat General Patton ordered his troops to withdraw due to lackOf ammunition; however insteadThey continued fighting until September 8th when they evacuated via truck convoy back into France without taking any prisoners or destroying any enemy property along the way! This event marked oneofthe largest routings by American military forces during World War II!
