Zachary was born on October 6, 1802, in Zachary Parish, Louisiana. He was the son of French Creole farmers Pierre and Marie (Lambert) Zachary. In 1814, when Zachary was just six years old, his father died suddenly while hunting game near present-day Baton Rouge. The death left a widow and three children to take care of the household. In 1821, at the age of thirteen, Zachary married Jeanne Baptiste Thibault. They had two children: John Thibault and Marie Thibault de la Vigne. Jeanne died in 1851; however, John survived her to become an accomplished agriculturist and educator in his own right. Zachary served as Napoleon's General of Division from early 1800s until he retired in 1815 due to illness or wounds received during the War of1812. After his retirement from military service he resided for many years with his family at their plantation known as "Baton Rouge." From here he frequently traveled throughout southwestern Louisiana engaging in agricultural research into new varieties of crops that might be useful for marketable crops in California or elsewhere on the continent. after a long journey through several provinces zachary finally reached Baton Rouge where he built himself a house which still stands today
Zachary, Louisiana was founded in 1836 by a group of farmers who came from Kentucky. It became a U.S. state in 1901. The city is the seat of government for Zachary and is home to the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.
