Zachary is a small, agricultural town in the parish of Alexandria. It is located on the north bank of the Atchafalaya River, about 30 miles east of New Orleans. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. Zachary was founded in 1802 by Colonel John C. Breaux as a trading post on the river delta. The town grew rapidly after an act of Congress authorized land grants to people who would settle in Louisiana and build steamboats to carry goods upriver. A school, Methodist church, and Masonic lodge were built in Zachary between 1825 and 1830; when it became known as New Orleans, the lodges disbanded and the school closed. The post office at Zachary was established in 1834; it continued operating until 1886. In 1865, a store and post office were built south of town on State Highway 9W; it closed operations in 1966. A courthouse was constructed northeast of town around 1870; it failed to meet standards set by state officials and closed several years later. Zachary has three churches: First Baptist Church (founded 1926), Second Baptist Church (founded 1928), and United Methodist Parish churches (1910-present). Zachary also has one school: Holy Rosaire School (1830). Zachary is a small town in the U.S. state of Louisiana, located on the Mississippi River. It is part of the Baton Rouge Metropolitan Statistical Area and has a population of about 18,000 people as of 2010. The area that would become Zachary was first settled by Native Americans in what is now Jefferson Parish. The first European to visit Zachary was Captain John Smith in 1699, who noted its location on the river and its abundance of natural resources including timber and waterfowl. In 1711, French explorer Jean Lafitte visited Zachary and named it La Ville de la Rose (the City of roses). In 1802, American general Andrew Jackson invaded Louisiana and found Zachary under Spanish control. He burned Spanish villages and plantations near present-day Lafayette before turning back upstream to take possession of New Orleans. When he reached La Ville de la Rose, he noticed an odd building nearby which he called "The White House." He ordered his men not to enter because he thought it was a fortification but they decided to name it "The White House" after General James Kenedy's house in Boston which they had seen while raiding Spanish installations upriver. A group of local businessmen built a sawmill at the mouth of the river in 1807; this became known as "The Townsite Mill", still standing today within walking distance of downtown Zachary. A courthouse and jail were also erected here during this time period; both are gone now but their foundations can be seen nearby around intersections such as University Avenue and Canal Street where they once satuate themselves (today only one wall remains from the original courthouse). Zachary had been mentioned by names such as "Havre d'Espagne" or simply called Houma since at least 1698 when Father François Vaugirard discovered oil Refinery on land owned by Pierre Lacoste northwest of modern day Houma . By 1800 alligator hunting had brought large numbers from Texas into this area so Houston entrepreneur Jethro Gibbs leased some 35 acres just below Grand Gulf for an oil refinery - although plans for refining crude oil continued even after completion due mostly to lack of competition from other sources like railways) with gasoline being processed there until 1902 when steam powered refineries began operations making use mostly (though not exclusively) vacuum distillation giving off harmful benzene gas emissions characteristic features often associated with old fashioned/gaseous refineries producing charring lights downwind
