The new United States Government decided that Westwego should be part of the newly formed Territory of Orleans, which was also located in present-day Louisiana. In 1815, during the Mexican War, General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna besieged Fort St. Philip on Bayou Lafitte and after many days siege succeeded in taking it by storm with only nineteen men remaining alive inside. After Mexico's victory over Spain at Buena Vista (1821), west Baton Rouge became part of Spanish Texas ceded to Mexico under this agreement. At this time much of present-day Baton Rouge County was included within Spanish Texas including parts of what is nowWestwego Parish. On July 1, 1836 when Louisiana became an American state following its admission into the Union, Westwego parish was transferred from Spanish Texas to become part of East Baton Rouge Parish then again to West Baton Rouge Parish on November 3rd 1865 when East Baton Rouge parish was combined with other parishes making up the New Orleans metropolitan area.
