After Haughton's death in 1851, his widow married John Meeks Sr., who ran a mill until 1862 when he sold it to Jules Ferry Sr.. Ferry operated it as a ferry service from New Orleans upriver to Metairie before merging with American Steamship Company (ASC) to form Gascogne Line in 1916. The company ceased operations in 1951 and its assets were acquired by Gulfport Steamship Company which became Western Marine Lines Corporation (WML). WML converted old steamers into container ships for shipping cargo overland from Mobile Bay through Texas ports of Laredo and Corpus Christi to Miami then downriver to New Orleans via Jackson Street Terminal before being unloaded at the river terminal on Canal Street opposite Joe Louis Arena during National Hockey League (NHL) games played at that venue. In 1984 WML merged with Gulf Ports Corporation forming Trans World Navigation Group plc.; however, this company failed within two years and was dissolved within six months of its establishment having lost money every year since its inception except for 1986 when it made a profit but went bankrupt again due to bad investment decisions connected with hurricanes Katrina and Rita.) According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all land. As of the census of 2000, there were 1,521 people, 597 households, and 458 families residing in the town. The population density was 886 people per square mile (344/km²). There were 659 housing units at an average density of 396 per square mile (227/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 92% White; 3% African American; 2% Native American; 0% Asian; and 1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2% of the population. There were 597 households out of which 36% had children under the age OF 18 living with them, 58% were married couples living together, 11% had a female householder with no husband present, and 24% were non-families. 21%of all households were made up of individuals and 10%, had someone living alone who was 65 years old or older
In 1892, the Webster Parish seat of Westwego was moved from New Orleans to Westwego in order to house the new parish. The move was made as a result of a consolidation of several parishes in Louisiana.
