Westwego, Louisiana is a town in the parish of Orleans in the New Orleans metropolitan area. As of 2010, the population was 7,584. The original Westwego settlement was established about 1818 and named for General Nicholas Westfall, who had commanded an American brigade during the War of 1812. The present-day town was formed from parts of Plaquemines Parish in 1898. It is located on a bend in the Mississippi River and straddles that river's course between St. Bernard Parish to its east and Jefferson Parish to its west. The economy of Westwego is primarily based on manufacturing and agriculture. The town has two hospitals, one public school district, four churches (Wesleyan Methodist Church, Episcopal), two libraries (one Catholic), three grocery stores (Albertsons Supermarket, Kroger Co., Safeway), two banks (First National Bank and State Street Bank) and a dozen or so small businesses. In 1806, Westwego Parish was organized from the eastern part of Louisiana. The parish seat was at New Orleans and it included present-day Westwego, Baton Rouge, and East Baton Rouge counties. The population in 1860 was 1,117. In 1972, a portion of the parish located in northeastern Louisiana became Westwego Parish again. The first white settler in what is now Westwego Parish was James Hancey in 1810. He and his family arrived on a boat from Mobile Bay and camped for several weeks on the banks of the Assumption River before moving inland to build their second home on land that they purchased from the French continued inhabitants of this area. A year later, Hancey married Mary Ann Butler who also came to live in what is now Westwego Parish. They had two children: James Jr., born 1811, and Nancy Elizabeth Hancey born 1813. Together with other early settlers such as John Atkins (1812-1876), Josephine Hammons (1815-1898), Nathaniel Smith (1796-1881), David Capps (1799-1882), James Witherspoon (1800-1881) and Nicholas Pryor (1788-1866), these people participated in various efforts to form a new county within Louisiana called Jackson County which eventually became Texas County when that state was formed in 1845. In January 1861, Confederate troops under General Robert Ewell attacked Union troops at Fredericksburg while General Ulysses S. Grant led an army westward across Virginia into Kentucky; this event marked the beginning of World War II for both countries. On July 8th 1862, ConfederateGeneral Nathan Bedford Forrest attacked Union forces at Carthage Plantation near Corinthinville; this event resulted in three dead Union soldiers as well as thirteen wounded men plus Forrest who managed to flee unharmed after achieving his objective by destroying many equipment or livestock belonging to the Union force including five cannons total! This attack effectively ended any hope of peace being restored between Confederate States of America and United States during 1861-1962! It wasn’t until November 3rd 1865 when President Abraham Lincoln issued Executive Order No. 11 which provided freedom for all slaves remaining within Mississippi Territory who were not registered with Masters & Servants Bureau within 6 months or risk punishment by law enforcement officials! All slaves living within Mississippi Territory must either leave immediately or be registered with Free State Militia if they could not do so by December 15th 1865 otherwise they would be subject to punishment by local authorities! This order spelled doom for many African Americans living within Mississippi Territory as it meant they would have no choice but to leave their homes until such time as their registration with Master & Servants Bureau could be obtained! Many chose instead to move further away from Republican controlled states like Mississippi where rations were scarce or worse yet turn against their own government altogether! This event provides insight into why some African Americans decided to migrate northward during those difficult times...or stay put where they were?
Westwego was a small town in the U.S. state of Louisiana before the post-Katrina Katrina evacuation. The population was about 2,500 at its height in late 2005 before the storm.
