Westwego is a town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 5,877 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Orleans–Metairie–Baton Rouge Combined Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1819 by General John Lawerence on a tract of land granted to him by the French government for his military service in suppressing Indian raids in what is now Lafayette Parish. The town name comes from an Old French word meaning "west bank" and "via", which refers to its location on the banks of the Assumption River. In 1845, Westwego became the seat of Jefferson Parish when it was created from parts of Bossier and Lafourche Parishes. In 1892, it became a city with a mayoral charter and mayoralty. In 1912, it lost its city charter but regained it in 1973 under Mayor James Mapp after being ruled unconstitutionally vacant for more than two years. Westwego has been noted for its large number of cemeteries, including Camp Street Cemetery and Forest Lawn Memorial Park. It also has several churches including Saint Laurent Catholic Church (founded 1886) and Our Lady Of Fatima Catholic Church (founded 1913). According to the 2010 census, Westwego had 5,877 residents; 3% were African American or black American alone; 20% were Hispanic or Latino; 84% were white; 2% Asian; 1% Native American/Alaskan Native; 0% Pacific Islander ; 14% from other races; and 6% who did not answer any question about their race

Westwego, Louisiana is a small town located in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. The population was 8,314 at the 2010 census. Westwego is bordered by Harvey to the north and east, Thibodaux to the south and west, and Bossier City to the northwest. The first European settlers in what is now Westwego were French Jesuit missionaries who arrived in 1760. They built a chapel on Cheniere Island which still stands today. In 1802, General Andrew Jackson made Westwego his headquarters when he was campaigning for president against John Quincy Adams. The Jesuits abandoned their island mission after Jackson took office and moved their headquarters to New Orleans. In 1804, Napoleon Bonaparte sent an army from Egypt through Jefferson Parish and entered into Westwego Creek on July 14th while supplies were being unloaded at Houma landing dockyards. A local resident named Francois Covington fought with Napoleon's forces until he was captured on September 4th near present day Greenville Village). After being paroled in 1807, Covington returned home and restarted his business as a saddlery store/cafeteria/wine cellar/package store called "Covington & Company". In 1861 two volunteer companies of Confederate soldiers from Lafourche Parish joined forces with General Braxton Bragg's cavalry brigade to fight against Union troops under Ulysses S Grant during the American Civil War. On October 13th 1862 Confederate General Robert E Lee attacked Union militia at Rosecrans Crossroads just outside of Westwego Cemetery which successfully defended by driving off Federal horse reinforcements led by Brigadier General Winfield Scott Hancock leading what became known as "the Battle of East Baton Rouge". The Post Office opened in 1875 (renamed "Westwego" in 1895) and operated until it closed its doors on December 15th 1951 (inaugurated by Governor Edwin Edwards). The last postmaster also served as mayor from 1949-1955; however no record exists of him having held that position beyond that date. After World War II many industries left WestweGO including automobiles manufacturing plants such as Poulan & Son CO., Inc., Ford Motor Company plants United Automobile Workers Local 98 (UAW Local 98), Chrysler Corporation plant #595-A&P Van Original Equipment Manufacturing Co., among others; however few remain today but offer memories of those days gone by like local auto parts store "Hickory Knob" which closed its doors back in 1984 after over 40 years serving customers with quality products grown here; or recall old fashioned ice cream stores like Old Holland Dairy where you could buy gallons of soft serve for 1¢ each!
