Westwego is a town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 2,898 at the 2010 census. Westwego is part of the New Orleans metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1824 by French traders and settlers from Acadia. It became a city in 1870. Westwego is named for Philippe-Jacques de Westwego, Marquis de Lafayette's aide-de-camp during the American Revolution and one of France's most famous citizens. He played an important role in leading Lafayette's army to victory at Yorktown and later served as president of the United States from 1789 to 1797; he also served as a general during the Mexican War (1846–48). The first recorded mention of what is now Westwego occurred when two men, Jean Baptiste Lafitte and Pierre Dorion, landed on the present day island of Grande Terre in 1824 while exploring the mouth of the Mississippi River. they named their new settlement "Westville" after King Louis XVIII of France who had granted them land along its banks on July 25 that year. In 1830, David Dixon built a cotton gin near present day downtown WV with his son John Dixon which helped spur heavy cotton production until 1865 when transportation improvements made by railroads brought about an end to this type of industry in America due to higher costs associated with shipping goods overland via wagon trains across country instead. In 1888 saw construction begin on what is now Saint Bernard Avenue which connected downtown Westville with Interstate 10 just south of Midway Boulevard; this addition greatly increased traffic through downtown WV and led to major changes in business patterns including several large retail chains locating within walking distance or less than five miles away from each other throughout much of Downtown WV during this time period: Sears Roebuck & Co., Jaffe’s department store (later Kress), Marshall Fields & Co., Macy’s Incorporated (later Neiman Marcus), Bloomingdale’s Incorporated (later Sephora) etc.. These rapid economic growth opportunities are documented by several physical expressions such as streetcars running up and down these streets all night long carrying passengers directly into/out of these stores or just past them on busy shopping days leaving all morning still open for business; same operators coming back out again late at night without any uproar or problems! This pattern continued until well into the 21st century although some smaller chains have since closed - either because they could not keep up with larger rivals or because competition from online sales has made it difficult for traditional brick-and-mortar retailers to compete against online merchants both large and small.. In 1870, after years characterized by slow growth rates due to lack of available natural resources such as oil wells or timberlands east side Jackson Parish had been abandoned due to miner strikes conducted there by farmers seeking better returns elsewhere. Today much remains unknown about early Rockefeller interests here but even today many ExxonMobil executives live within easy driving distance.....During World War I various small businesses located near Belleau Wood operated providing munitions supplies needed by US forces fighting overseas while others manufactured food items sold door-to-door primarily thru local phone lines thru marketing campaigns developent especially among women WWIAPIAsWWII
