Westwego, Louisiana is the smallest and most rural of the ten Orleans Parish parishes. The population was 1,993 in 2000 and 2,029 in 2010. The parish was established on March 10, 1802 from parts of St. Bernard Parish and West Feliciana Parish. It was named for Captain John Westwego who fought in the American Revolution against British forces at Fort Caroline. It became a part of the United States after the end of World War II. The population increased rapidly during the late 20th century due to immigration from Mexico and other parts of Latin America; however, this growth has slowed since then as various economic problems have arrived in town including a high rate of crime, low educational opportunities, and decreasing wages for many workers. The parish is located on both sides of I-10 just east of Baton Rouge with its capital city being Westwego on the north side while East Baton Rouge lies to its south. According to the 2010 census, there are 987 households out of which 30% have children under 18 living with them, 50% are married couples living together, 15% have a female householder with no husband present, 5% have a male householder with no wife present, and 75% are non-families. The average family size is 3.29 and the average family income is $32,912
Westwego was founded in 1849 by Capt. John Westwego and his wife, Emmalee. The town grew rapidly due to its location on the Mississippi River and its access to goods available only a short distance away. In 1857, the town became a post office and in 1865, it became a city. The population of Westwego increased rapidly during the mid-19th century due to immigration from all over the United States and Europe. By 1870, Westwego had become one of the most populous cities in Louisiana. However, during World War I, Westwego lost many residents to military service. In 1940, after Hurricane Katrina caused extensive damage to the city, WestweGO was renamed New Orleans for temporary relief purposes only.
