Westwego, Louisiana is a small town located in the parish of Westwego in La. Orleans County, in south-central Louisiana. The population was 1,564 at the 2010 census. In 1836, French colonists arrived in what is now Westwego from Iberia Parish and began to cultivate land around present day Lake Pontchartrain. A post office was established at Westwego in 1837 and remained operational until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1840, John Baptiste Poulain erected a log cabin on what is now known as Pigeon Point Road. By 1851, there were five settlements scattered around what are today Acreage Road (formerly Route 66), Frenchman's Bend Road (now US 65), Canal Street (now Canal Street Boulevard), Dutch Landing Road (now US 61) and Post Office Bayou (now Bayou Lafourche). Poulain had been one of many Creole landowners who resisted efforts by Spanish authorities to purchase their slaves for use as domestic servants or agricultural workers throughout much Of Louisiana during the years before American independence from Spain in 1800s. When news reached him about American efforts to gain independence he decided to help develop his holdings into an independent community rather than allow himself be taken indentured servitude once again like so many others across his extensive land holdings east of Baton Rouge including those run by his brother-in-law Antoine de la Salle along the banks of the Sabine River where he built some of contemporary New Orleans’ earliest brick buildings including Christ Church Cathedral which remains extant today as well as several other notable structures including State Capitol building still standing on its original site within walking distance today only accessible through an elaborate entrance/exit tunnel dug under downtown New Orleanians lovely Stuyvesant Heights neighborhood since Katrina destroyed nearly all but two thirds or so of this historic district while leaving virtually nothing remaining except for modest heritage commercial complexes clustered around prominent Fifth Ward thoroughfare naming after streetcar lines that once crossed Kelly Avenue between these blocks northward down Elmwood Avenue thence northwest along fashionable Grand Army Plaza behind Lafayette Park before reaching Audubon Circle just off MacArthur Boulevard just west side thereof immediately adjacent thereto) - describing early 19th century communityscape with plantations nearby; "all grown up" trees & flowers here 5 decades ago
