Westwego was a small town in Louisiana, located on the Arkansas River. The population of Westwego was 1,812 at the 2010 census. Westwego is part of the Jefferson Parish subdivision of New Orleans. The first settlers in what is now Westwego were Frenchmen who arrived in 1719 to settle a trading post called Fort de Chartres on the banks of the Arkansas River. The site became known as Acadia after a French fur trader and explorer, Jean Nicolet, named it for his home province of Canada. In 1803, General Andrew Jackson's army burned down Fort Chartres and abandoned Acadia for good. In 1804, Captain Anthony Hendry built a new fort at present-day WestweGO which served as a military outpost until 1814 when it reverted to civilian control under Confederate authority following the Battle of New Orleans. During Reconstruction (1868-1877), Westwego experienced high levels of poverty and violence due to economic stress caused by Reconstruction policies implemented by President Ulysses S. Grant's administration. Despite this challenge, many people from Westwego made significant contributions to their community during this time including entrepreneur John Aydelotte and physician Drs James Mclntyre and Francis Pelly. The post office at WestweGO was established on July 4, 1857; its first occupant was Mrs Alice Jourdan Mailhotick with her husband John Mailhotick Sr.. mail service began operations from Lousiana Post Office building on December 2nd 1861 along with other early postal services in Louisiana such as telegraph service inaugurated that year also from Lousiana Post Office building - both services were discontinued some years later because primarily rural residents could not afford stamps or had no convenient location for receiving them). On November 15th 1870 Robert Epps donated land southwest of town on which St Mary's Catholic Church now stands forded the Arkansas River just north of where current day IH 10 meets US 90/US 97 junction just eastofpresent-dayLafayette Street intersection - henceforth known as "Epps Road." This donation effectively founded St Mary's parish within present day Lafrance Parish near present day Baton Rouge while also providing access to river crossing points across Lafrance Parish thereby increasing commerce opportunities between Lafayette & East Baton Rouge Parishes through improved transportation links between these two parishes thus stimulating increased economic development in those areas adjacent to Lafrance Parish
In 1871, the town of Westwego was founded by a group of pioneers who had migrated from Louisiana. The town grew rapidly and soon became a center for trade and commerce in the area. In 1892, Westwego became the seat of government for Bossier Parish. In 1922, the parish was divisible into two parts - Bossier Parish and Webster Parish - and Westwego became part of Webster Parish. On July 1, 1923, Webster Parish was merged with Bossier Parish to form La Salle Parish.
