Westwego was the first town in Claiborne Parish, Louisiana. It was founded in 1853 on a tract of land that had been purchased from the Chitimacha Native Americans by Colonel John C. Frémont. The town was named for General James W. Westmoreland, who had served as Commandant of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and then as United States Secretary of War under President James Buchanan. The townsite was located near present-day New Orleans, about 25 miles west of Claiborne Parish seat Baton Rouge and 125 miles east of Lafayette, Louisiana. In 1854, settlers arrived from Illinois and other parts of the South to begin building homes and businesses in what is now Westwego. Some residents also bought land east of the original town site to establish additional settlements known as Eastwego, Westwego Village, and Livingston Manor. In 1865, following the American Civil War, Claiborne Parish was created from portions of Orleans Parish including Westwego Township and became an official parish with its own government headed by a sheriff elected by vote at county level rather than through appointment by Governor Andrew Johnson or any othersource
