The first European to visit what is now Westwego was Father Jacques Marquette on May 14, 1682. He and his party were exploring the Gulf Coast of Louisiana when they came across an abandoned mission called Cahokia on the banks of the Mississippi River. The British landing at Noumea in New Caledonia in 1769 had forced French missionaries from their missions near Presentation Point on the bayous of Lake Pontchartrain to build fortified settlements along the riverbanks. Jesuit priests continued to operate smallpox-infected hospitals in various areas of Louisiana until 1803 when all American medical personnel arrived and these facilities were closed down. On July 12, 1806 Governor Claiborne attempted to annex part of Acadia County (now Orleans) into Lafourche Parish but this effort failed because there was no vote taken by either house of Congress for annexation.
