Westwego is a small town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 2,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Orleans–Metairie–Bogalusa Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in what is now Westwego were the Achenegas who migrated from Venezuela in the 16th century. The first white residents arrived in 1812 when General James K. Polk and his army moved west through Louisiana after victory over Mexico in the American Civil War. They founded a small community called Prairie du Rochelle on land that they had acquired from La Sorte de Tonkin, an Indian chief who had been captured by Ulysses S. Grant's forces during the war. The town name was changed to Westwego after General Polk's death in 1845 while serving as president of the United States. The post office was established at Westwego on December 12, 1852, and named for General Polk's hometown of Prairie du Rochelle, Missouri; it served until it was discontinued on March 1, 1865 due to mail service being available only between New Orleans and Baton Rouge. In 1862, Confederate General Braxton Bragg destroyed much of New Orleans with his famous UnionArmy Raid known as "the retention raid". As a result of this attack many businesses and homes became unusable and some remain so today including The Masonic Temple which still stands today (it burned down on April 9th 1865) After Reconstruction ended following the end of World War II most African Americans left for new opportunities elsewhere within America or abroad but some did stay behind to help maintain their culture and way of life within Westwego while others relocated to other areas in Jefferson Parish such as Gentilly or Chalmette parish near Ville Platte avenue where they continued their African American traditions even though these areas were more racially segregated than what existed within Westwego at that time Notwithstanding these challenges some residents persevered with various forms of activism including founding local chapters/associations of national organizations like NAACP (National Association for Negro Citizens), forming political clubs/groups like Young Democrats or Rotary Clubs or joining other voluntary groups engaged in civic responsibility such as sponsoring school pep rallies or contributing money for scholarships for young black women attending Tulane University . In recent years many descendants have also started moving back into their ancestral homes which has helped bring back some lost cultural memories connected with early settlers .

Westwego is a town in Hancock County, Louisiana, United States. The population was 2,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lafayette Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first known permanent residents of what is now Westwego were French colonists who arrived in 1720. They named their village after a location in Normandy called Wegonville and they built their first houses there in 1722. The original town site lay on low ground east of present-day Interstate 10, north of the mouth of the Red River and west of modern-day Interstate 59. In 1803, General Andrew Jackson's army passed through this area during its march from Baton Rouge to New Orleans and decided to stay here for several days before continuing on their journey southward. In 1821, Westwego was chartered as a town by then-Governor Claiborne Jackson with the name "Westwego". That year it had a population of about 350 people. A post office was established at Westwego in 1825 and remained open until 1904. As early as 1830, wagon trains carrying goods from Illinois stopped at Westwego for delivery; by 1840 these shipments had dwindled to nothing and the Post Office closed permanently due to budget cuts by Governor Zachary Taylor. A small mill was started near present day US 60/I-10 in 1851; it failed within two years because no one could afford to maintain it. However, this mill did produce some flour which helped fuel local mills until World War II when synthetic oil became available domestically made flour became more affordable than imported wheat flour that required expensive transportation costs to get into marketplaces across America). In 1865 an act was passed providing for organized Baptist church services starting on Easter Sunday instead of celebrated annually as originally planned by earlier Baptists who desired religious liberty under Reconstructionist President Abraham Lincoln’s new government (which included racism). This change caused some friction with other Protestant denominations that also wanted services conducted according to their own calendar which caused many families living near US 59/I-10 not to join or worship at any Baptist churches until Creek Baptist Church moved its services there from Livingston Parish in 1893 – making race relations much better alongEast side Lafayette Parish where almost all white people lived prior to then) Today most people identify themselves as Methodists or Presbyterians although there are still active African American Baptists (Uptown Methodist Episcopal Church), Pentecostal missionaries (Church Missionary Society), Latter Day Saints (Church Young Men’s Christian Association), Jehovah’s Witnesses (Jehovah’s Witnesses Branch #1) and Roman Catholics (St John's Cathedral - East End) located throughout downtown Lafayette which anchored what used once been primarily black business districts bounded by Third Street SW / I-10 & Main Street NW
Westwego, Louisiana was settled in 1824 and named for General James West. The town was established on the west bank of the Mississippi River and became a manufacturing center for cotton plantations. In the 1960s, Westwego experienced population growth due to its location near the Alabama-Louisiana line.
