This handle allowed shooters to hold their guns more comfortably while shooting. In 1871, Second Lieutenant John Wimbley purchased land southeast of Westwego in what is now Acadia Parish. This land was designated as Rifle Range No. 2, and this location would serve as the home range of Major General James Hogg from 1874-1875. At this time, rifle Trigger mechanisms were not common because they required a lot of dexterity to use and could be inaccurate if mishandled. Additionally, trigger systems were expensive to purchase and maintain. In 1895, Second Lieutenant David Sisson purchased land northwest of Westwego in what is now St Tammany Parish. This land was designated as Rifle Range No. 3 and this location would serve as the home range of Captain Arthur Tisdale from 1896-1901. At this time, rifle Trigger mechanisms became more common because they required less dexterity to use and could fire multiple rounds at once with ease due to their design flaws that caused them to malfunction unpredictably on occasion. Additionally, trigger systems became much cheaper to purchase and maintain due to advances in engineering within society at that time!

The town was founded on a rice plantation in 1848 by General John P. Morgan and Dr. James Kenedy, two of the founders of Tulane University. Westwego became an incorporated municipality in 1892, and then an unincorporated community in 1924. The original Westwego post office was established in 1849, but closed in 1865 due to lack of mail volume. The first store opened in 1886; it was later replaced by a movie theater which burned down in 1951. Westwego is located at (29°16′02″N 87°12′36″W). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all land. As of the census of 2000, there were 2,811 people, 1,123 households, and 710 families residing in the town. The population density was 901/km² (2,724/mi²). There were 1,269 housing units at an average density of 309/km² (1,619/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 97% white and 3% black or African American; 0% Native American; 0% Asian; 0% from other races; and 1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latinoof any race were 2%.

Westwego is a town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 10,671 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Orleans–Metairie–Bogalusa Micropolitan Statistical Area. The town began as a small community on the banks of the Mississippi River near present-day Westwego and Chalmette. On July 4, 1804, Warrick Brown purchased 1,500 acres (500 ha) in what is now Westwego from Major John Kirby for $4 per acre. That same year, Brown organized a small group of entrepreneurs to develop this land into a settlement. In 1805 or 1806, he built a log cabin and named it "Westwego." He later changed the name to "West Point". In 1811 or 1812, Pierre Jacque Mallet set up shop in West Point and began trading goods with traders along the river. By 1830 or 1830s most of what is now Westwego had been settled by French Canadians who had come downriver to work on sugar plantations during the American Revolution. Many Huguenots also arrived during this time period; some were naturalized citizens but many became Catholics because they felt persecuted by their Protestant compatriots. When America gained independence from Great Britain in 1776, many colonists left for new countries inNorth America east of Mexico City – primarily Livingston County inNew York State and Assumption Parish (now Acadiana)inLouisiana Territory – because they did not believe that slavery would be established under English rule as it had been under British rule until 1763. Among these colonists was Antoine Le Moyne de La Salle's brother-in-law Jacques Lafitte (1721-1803), one of Louisiana's first white settlers and founder of Biloxi Junction on Bayou St John near Mobile Bayou Lafitte). When France ceded control over Louisiana to Spain after defeat in the Spanish–American War (1898), Lafitte voluntarily moved his family south to become an employee of Ysabel Pérez de Arce y Quintero y Hidalgo (Queen Victoria's consul general at New Orleans from 1861 to 1865). Spanish authorities deported all members of Lafitte's household so he could not return home until after Napoleon Bonaparte declared himself emperor of France on May 5th 1870 and reinstated Catholicism as an official religion throughout much of Europe; however, he managed to elude capture for more than two years before being betrayed and arrested at Compostela Valley near Burgos Cathedral on October 25th 1871 while crossing into Spain through Gibraltar with 30 other captives including his daughter Marie Louise Etienne married Captain Alfred D'Urban Montero y Castilla) aboard HMS Pandora when she was captured off Tortuga Island by Royal Navy Commodore Harry Vattelage while flagship HMAS Australia steamed between San Francisco Bay and Cape Horn In 1893 Don Pedro González López donated 136 acres (50 ha) north side Of Iuka Avenue To The Historic Preservation Authority For Protection And Restoration Of A Federal National Monument Named After José Gomez Guerrero1920 To Honor His Father And ancestors Who Lived Here During The Mexican Revolution 1914 - 1917 pursuant To Executive Order No 02609 dated November 12 1920 This donation Includes All Buildings Which Are Or Were Used As A Federal Prison From 1915 through 1923 inclusive & Which Were Located On The Left Side Of Iuka Ave.(Now More Than 50 Years Later That Property Is Still owned By The Authority)] In 1910 Ulysses S Grant visited Westwego while en route from Baton Rouge across Lake Pontchartrain to New Orleans] At That Time It Had 2 churches & A Post Office which Was Converted Into A Baptist Church Over 100 Years Ago Today Larry King Live Broadcast Opened Up One Of Those Churches Which Is Now An Event Center Nearby.] On November 12th 1920 Ulysses S Grant issued Executive Order No 02609 ordering that all buildings used as federal prisons between 1915-1923 be removed from sight within five miles radius thereof[This order included all buildings located on the right side(now more than 50 years later that property is still owned bythe authority)]] In 1967 East Baton Rouge Parish erected A plaque Dedicating Two Bridges Over Lake Pontchartrain Between Our Parish And Jefferson PARISH LINCOLN COUNTY JEFFERSON PRAIRIE AND WESTWEGO MISSISSIPPI RIVER
