Westwego is a town in Lafayette Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 4,824 at the 2010 census. Westwego is one of the most populous and diverse towns in Lafayette Parish. It is part of the New Orleans–Metairie Metropolitan Statistical Area. The history of Westwego can be traced back to 1845 when two men named John Randolph and George Washington Waller began to develop land that would become what is now known as Westwego. The original plat for the town was 8 miles long and 1/2 mile wide. In 1871, James Hogg purchased the plat from Randolph and soon after began construction on a small village that would house about 100 people. Hogg named his new community Westwego after his native parish in Scotland where he had been born in 1825. In 1900, the Post Office moved from its original location at present day I-10 and US-13 to what is now Main Street where it currently stands. At that time, Main Street amounted to just a few feet wide between buildings... today it measures over 50 feet wide! Back then, there were only three stores in town; two general stores (one located on Third Street on the east side), and one blacksmith shop (on First Avenue). Today there are eight businesses scattered throughout downtown with an additional four restaurantsand two bars located on University Avenue which forms part of downtown's commercial district. In 1916, when Lafayette Parish became a county within Louisiana, Westwego lost its own post office but gained access to Lafayette County mail boxes which remain today inside City Hall across from LAFAYETTE COUNTY courthouse - making it one of only two towns in Lafayette Parish with both municipal services fully coordinated by city hall! From 1951 until 1957 before becoming an independent parish within Louisiana again (Lafayette parish became an unincorporated area once again), WESTWEGO residents received their mailbox service through various private companies including Earthlink Telephone Company until 1978 when they switched back to the Louisiana state government provided service through LAFAYETTE COUNTY'S ONLY ELECTRONIC MAIL BOX SERVICE! By 2007 all BUT ONE business licensees had moved out or closed up shop due to lack of customer support or competition from technology providers; however 2 churches still operate out of storefronts using USPS packages!!! In early 2017 plans were made by some local business owners & officials - spearheaded by Mayor Foster -to redevelop much of downtown into mixed use retail/ cultural/residential space & parkland with hopes restoring some historic buildings & improving pedestrian flow thru center while also creating jobs !! However this has yet to materialize as no funding ever came Available

The town continued to grow throughout its early years, becoming one of the most important settlements in East Texas A&M County until it lost its status as an official seat during Reconstruction following the Civil War. After reconstruction, Westwego experienced a period of growth and prosperity that has never been bettered since. Over time, however, many aspects of life in Westwego have begun to change for the better due to increased competition from neighboring cities such as New Orleans and Lafayette. As a result, many businesses have decided to move away from Westwego into newer or more hostile environments such as Baton Rouge or Shreveport. However, despite these challenges, there are still many residents who maintain strong ties to their community and enjoy participating in its vibrant culture and shared history
Westwego was a town in Orleans Parish, Louisiana, United States. It was located on the west bank of the Mississippi River, about 12 miles (19 km) north of New Orleans. The population was 14,971 at the 2000 census. The town was founded by white settlers in 1824 and named for Hector Westwego, an American Revolutionary War soldier and congressman from Louisiana. In 1830, the town passed through a land acquisition process that saw it annexed by New Orleans. By 1840, Westwego had reached its peak as a merchant and agricultural community with 300 businesses. However, during Reconstruction following the American Civil War, most of the wealth and power left Westwego as African Americans began to return to their former societies in ways that contradicted white authority. This period is often called Reconstructionville because much of what happened there remains controversial or unexplained today.
