Westwego, Louisiana is a town located in the U.S. state of Louisiana. The population was 3,527 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Shreveport–Bossier City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1836 by Frenchmen and Spanish immigrants, who named it for their birthplace, Wexford, County Tipperary, Ireland. The first white settlers arrived in Westwego in 1836 and began to build homes and a store on the present-day site of downtown Westwego. The town was incorporated on December 12, 1853. In 1865, Wacoalco Bridge was built over the Canadian River to connect Westwego with neighboring Lafayette Parish and allowed for easier access to goods brought downriver from New Orleans by steamboats. After Hurricane Katrina destroyed many businesses and homes in 2005, residents elected Mayor Jerald Peele to lead a reconstruction effort that included restoring infrastructure and creating new businesses opportunities within the town limits. Today, Westwego is an important cultural center for the Baton Rouge metropolitan area as well as a bedroom community for Shreveport–Bossier City. With its reconstructed buildings and thriving economy, it is one of the most vibrant towns in central Louisiana

Westwego, Louisiana is a small town located in the parish of Orleans in east Baton Rouge County, Louisiana. The population was 4,854 at the 2010 census. Westwego is part of the Monroe Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to settle in what is now Westwego were French colonists who arrived on the Lower Mississippi River region during the 18th century. In 1784, a group of Englishmen founded a trading post and named it Fort McAllister after Major General James McAllister who had fought for England against Spain in the American Revolution. The fort was abandoned by 1807 and has been variously used as a farm or storehouse ever since. In 1819, landowner Isaac Rice purchased 1,000 acres (500 hectares) near present-day Westwego from John Kirby for $4 per acre. Rice began developing this land into what is now known as Riceville Township which he named after his father-in-law, Elijah Rice. He built several homes there including one called "Honeymoon" which still stands today. rice also became involved in politics and served as mayor of Clinton from 1830 to 1834 and member of the state legislative delegation from 1840 to 1845 representing Baton Rouge County; he also served as president pro tempore of the state senate from 1850 to1851. Rice died suddenly while on vacation in Florida in 1851 and was buried at Prairie View A&M University where his descendants still attend school today. After Rice's death, his son Jacob took over management of the township until 1865 when he sold it to Charles Sutherlin who renamed it Westwego Township after himself and added an additional 500 acres (200 hectares). At that time, most people living around here spoke only English so development proceeded slowly until World War II when many new residents migrated here because cotton production increased along with war resources such as gasoline available for use by aircraft manufacturers during that period OFWIs (Overseas Filipino workers). This growth continued through the 1950s with some businesses opening up like Sweetbay Grocery Company which started out as a grocery store on Church Street before becoming an entertainment complex complete with movie theater, bowling alley and more that continues today under different ownership groups including One South William Street Development LLC - formerly known as Premier Cinemas - which opened its doors on November 7th 2016 just days before Hurricane Katrina struck hurricane relief efforts ashorezilla Parish; however due to numerous safety concerns this business closed soon afterwards following extensive damage caused by Irma #LAFloodAhead
