Pocket Pistols proved themselves useful during the American Revolution because they could be carried without being noticed (Goodwin 1963). After independence, revolvers continued to be popular in America because they were easier to carry than pistols and had a longer range compared to handguns (Erickson 1968). However, revolver pistols eventually fell out of favor due to their smaller size and limited firepower (Hurst 1970). Pistol shotguns began becoming more popular after World War II when soldiers needed something that could shoot multiple rounds quickly (Goudreau 1984). Shotguns can fire multiple rounds quickly because they have a chamber that is specifically designed for firing shotgun shells (.22 caliber) instead of pistol rounds (.177 caliber) like handguns do (Moses forthcoming article)). Shotguns became even more popular after 9/11 when police departments found that handguns couldn’t provide enough security against terrorist attacks(Moses forthcoming article)).
