Westwego, Louisiana is a small town located in Sabine Parish, Louisiana. The population was 2,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Baton Rouge metropolitan area. Westwego is known for its horses and cattle ranching, as well as its history and culture. The first Europeans to visit what is now Westwego were French in 1699 and 1800 when they sailed upriver from New Orleans under the command of Jean Baptiste La Salle. They named the place "Isabelle" after Queen Isabel II of Spain, who had just become queen of France following her father's death. After La Salle's arrival, traders arrived with goods and animals to trade with local Native Americans such as the Atchafalaya Indians. In 1802, Andrew Jackson became president of the United States and ordered General Robert Ewell to invade Texas to quash any possible rebellion by Mexican forces there before he could establish his claim to the entire country as President James K. Polk had done earlier that year on behalf of Mexico while still governor of Texas! Ewell invaded Texas but failed due to lack of support from Ulysses S. Grant who was then commanding American forces in Illinois! This event led directly to War Between the States which lasted for years until 1865 when Confederate General Robert Ewell surrendered at Appomattox Court House following a successful guerrilla campaign against Union troops commanded by Ulysses S. Grant! Westwego began Settlement in 1795 when two families started farming on land donated by Judge John Whitehead near present day Post Road #1 & Depot Road #2 in what would later be called East Wegotoga Township #2 (now Post Road #7). wagonloads of produce were brought downriver daily from Iberia Parish during this time so much so that one family established a grocery store/butcher shop on Main Street opposite East Wegotoga High School which continued operations until 1942!!! In 1832 Jno Wicker built a sawmill which provided lumber for many homes and businesses including churches & schools throughout Sabine Parish including Westwego! The mill closed around 1840 but reopened in 1907!! A post office was founded here on September 3rd 1892!!! The first school open here was an academy erected in 1895 by Reverend Landon Caddo using money raised through sales of subscriptions to his newspaper "The Courier". A second high school followed suit soon afterwards also using proceeds from subscription sales!! The first pastor here was Rev John Whitehead who served from 1896-1901 !! In 1903 Rev Hennady Bourgeois took over helm at First Congregational Church serving until 1911 !! Here also originated "Pioneer Day", December 6th 1906 celebrated annually ever since !! During World War I (1914-18) residents mobilized their community early contributing $10 per hour towards food supplies needed by military camps acrossSabine Parish; ultimately resulting in more than $500 worthof goods being sent out!! Many members remain buried within East Wegotoga Cemetery today including Mrs Hennady Bourgeois herself along with her husband Lt Col Jno Wicker Jr., son Mr Hennady Bourgeois III & grandson Dr Alain Bourgeois IV

Westwego is the oldest continuously inhabited community in Orleans Parish and the second largest parish in Louisiana. It sits on a bayou that empties into the Mississippi River. The town was founded by white settlers in 1818 and named for George Washington West (1785-1846). Westwego's history can be traced back to 1818 when white settlers arrived in what is now Orleans Parish. They named their new community after George Washington West, who had helped lead American forces during the War of 1812. By 1830, there were over 100 residents living in Westwego. In 1834, local resident James Pogue donated land to establish a school system in the area. In 1840, a courthouse was built and opened for business. The early years of Westwego were difficult due to periodic flooding that destroyed homes and businesses along the bayou. However, through hard work and determination, the town began to prosper thanks to its location on an important waterway and access to goods from neighboring communities. By 1860, there were over 400 residents living in Westwego; however, it would not remain as an agricultural center for long! A railroads came through this region which led to increased trade and industry which soon brought prosperity to WestweGO! The 1850s also saw significant growth within the African American community due to cotton plantations becoming popular among planters throughout Louisiana during this time period! This demand for labor caused many black families residing in west Baton Rouge County near New Orleans to move en masse into what is now East Baton Rouge Parish during this time period! These large scale migrations created numerous new settlements including: Metairie (founded 1865), Covington (founded 1870), Lafayette (founded 1875), Thibodaux (founded 1880), East Baton Rouge Parish (established 1886), Lafourche County (established 1888)’ etc….. As west Baton Rouge County became more developed with heavy industry present along with ample resources available nearby such as oil refineries and lumber mills-WestweGO prospered even further!businesses dwindled beginning around 1960 but slowly began returning starting around 1970 with limited job prospects until current day conditions where little or no jobs are available

Westwego was first known as Beauregard and later changed to Westwego after France purchased it from the British in 1802. The town's name originated from its location on the west bank of the St. Bernard River. In 1849, when Louisiana became a state, Westwego became part of Jefferson Parish and remained so until 1959.
