Gun Parts History in Westwego, Louisiana began in the early 1800s when French settlers first arrived in the region. The early guns and ammunition used by these settlers were made from local materials such as wood, stone, and animal skin. In 1819, a gunsmith named Pierre Vignerot opened a shop in what is now known as downtown Westwego. This shop was among the first to sell firearms outside of France. From here, Vignerot began to produce high-quality firearms for both European and American customers. Over time, his shop became well-known throughout the area for its fine firearms products and knowledgeable staff. In 1897, a new armory was built near downtown Westwego by Colonel John Sibley of Mobile Commandery fame. Referred to as “The Arsenal” this facility was designed to serve both French and American forces alike. Soon after its opening, The Arsenal became home to one of America’s most significant firearm manufactures: Colt Firearms Company Ltd.. It would be at The Arsenal that world famous handguns such as the Colt Model 1886 revolver would be manufactured. Today, The Arsenal still operates as an important arms dealership serving both domestic and international customers! The community was founded by French colonists in 1804 as "Prairie du Lachapelle". The name was changed to Westwego in 1814 when it became part of Orleans Parish. In 1870, it became a parish and was renamed Terrebonne Parish. The population increased from 2,223 at the 2000 census to 1,752 at the 2010 census. Westwego is located on State Route 90 east-northeast of Baton Rouge and west-southwest of Shreveport. According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of , all land. As of the census[2] of 2010, there were 1,752 people residing in Westwego village. Of these 724 (or 98%) were white; 256 (or 11%) black or African American; 5 (or 0.3%) Native American; 4 (or 0.2%) Asian; and 3 (or 0.1%) from two or more races
