The main thoroughfare through town is I-10/Loop 610 W which runs northeasterly from its eastern terminus near downtown New Orleans downriver to Uptown Westwego where it turns southeast towards Midtown Manhattan The parish seat of Jefferson Parish, which had been located in what is now part of Westwego since 1824, was moved from Monroe to neighboring Stroudsburg in 1874 following a local landowner's donation that made room for him on his plantation for an addition two miles (3 kilometers) northeast of present-day Westwego. At first called "New Iberia," this new municipality soon became known as "WestweGO" due to its location on the banks of the Mississippi River just upstream from then-Wacoal territory claimed by both Texas and Mexico before Louisiana Purchase (1803). That original name has stuck around ever since as one way locals identify their community within Jefferson Parish... even if some also refer to it today as simply "WestWEGO." In fact, when historian John Tanton published his book "Jefferson Parish: A History" in 1997 he managed not only to provide surveys throughout all but every square mile (1 km²) of present day Jefferson parish dating back more than 100 years but did so using data collected via automated surveying devices operated by Litton Surveying Company starting with a truck driven round trip survey initiated just prior thereto! To date no other parish in Louisiana has undergone such consistent systematic land surveying publications over such an extended period… prefiguring even later updated aerial photo surveys currently being conducted statewide!! In short “westWEGO” still remains unassessed or undervalued compared with most other locations throughout our state today…………………………………..

In 1951, Westwego Elementary School was opened as one of two elementary schools within Jefferson Parish's then-new system of public education which had been created following passage of a state constitutional amendment granting school choice to citizens residing outside specific parish boundaries. The other school was Easton Elementary School located in East Baton Rouge Parish near downtown Baton Rouge
