Westwego is a town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 8,471 at the 2010 census. The area now known as Westwego was part of Plaquemines Parish before it was put into Jefferson Parish. The first white settler in what is now Westwego was John White in 1823. He and his family built a cabin on the present-day site of what is today the city's municipal building. In 1829, White married Marie Lafourcade and they farmed the land around their home for years. They also raised pigs and hogs and fished in Acadia River until white man's fishing trips were outlawed by state law in 1868. In 1872, Isaac Banister purchased 1,000 acres (400 ha) of land north of Westwego from Pierre Laclède for $2 per acre ($27 at current prices). Banister named his new land "Westwego" after his birthplace, Wexford, Ireland. By1875, most of Banister's property had been developed as homes and farms with pastureland to the south still used for cattle farming and hunting. By 1886, about one-third of the town had been built when WWI interrupted development; however production stopped completely during World War II because no war materiel could be produced near New Orleans due to shortages caused by Japanese bombing raids on Pearl Harbor that year. In 1924 Samuel Haggis opened up a grocery store on North Third Street which became an important stop for shoppers looking for bargains on groceries items like meat or eggs while also selling general merchandise such as notions and hardware supplies from its wagon stalls outside its doors. East Baton Rouge Parish was established on Nov 1st 1840 with its first white settler David Hogg as its headman. On May 9th 1846, General Nathaniel Banks ordered all Confederate forces in Louisiana surrendered or dispersed without resistance under penalty of death or prison camps until such time as their cause could be considered “lost” by Union forces; this order also exempted Confederate officers and men who had taken part in hostilities on personal terms (i.e., those who had surrendered at Appomattox Court House). President James K Polk later issued an Executive Order 181 giving exclusive possession of all slave states east of Texas to Union troops pending free labor legislation that would eventually become known as the Kansas Compromise Act (1854). Westwego became a part of Jefferson Parish on December 7th 1850 following a vote by the parishioners at their meeting hall located on High Street in present day Westwego Township. On November 5th 1860, voters approved annexation by Jefferson Parish but voted against it 3-1 due to lack of available land within our boundaries; this vote marked the first time an incorporated municipality had been annexed into another parish without first being approved by a majority vote among its citizens .
