Thereafter, many residents abandoned their homes after Reconstruction ended in 1868; only 1 percent remain today. Many local businesses closed during this time period because few people wanted to operate within Yankee control; there were also few opportunities for advancement for African Americans during that era. However, some locals did manage to reopen businesses after Reconstruction but struggled until after World War II whenormalization took place and black Americans began moving into Westwego from other parts of Louisiana and elsewhere in the south due to new opportunities created by technological advances such as automobiles and air travel
