These settlers named their settlement Westwego after the town of Wegesheim, Germany, where they had originated. The first residents of Westwego settled near the Mississippi River on what is now Bellefontaine Street. They dug ditches and built fences to protect their land from Native Americans. The first guns that these settlers acquired were rifles and pistols. In 1802, three men named Isaac Roussel bought land west of Bellefontaine Street and began building a rancho called Rancho de las Pulgas (Rancho of Gophers). This ranch was used by ranchers for grazing cattle and hunting game. Roussel also built a cabin on his property for himself and his family. In 1806, another man named James Wilkinson purchased land east of Bellefontaine Street from Roussel. He established a farm called Wilkinson’s Prairie (Wilkinson’s Farm). This farm was used by farmers for raising crops and hunting game animals. Wilkinson also built a house on his property for himself and his family. In 1809, another man named John Sisson bought land east of Bellefontaine Street from Wilkinson Jr.. He established an agricultural colony called Sisson’s Colony (Sisson’s Settlement). This colony was used by farmers for growing crops and raising livestock. Sisson also built a house on his property for himself and his family

Westwego, LA is a small town in Livingston Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 1,542 at the 2010 census. The town was platted in 1849 as part of the Town of Westwego on an area which now includes the city of Alexandria. It was named for Colonel James W. Westwego (1796-1863), a hero of the Battle of Buena Vista and one of the first white men to visit what would become Louisiana. The town developed around two churches: First Baptist Church (founded in 1853) and Second Baptist Church (built in 1892). In 1898, Westwego became a stop on the East Coast Railway and soon became known for its produce, including apples from LSU's Agricultural Research Station; tomatoes from an orchard east of Alexandria; and other vegetables grown by farmers near Baton Rouge. In 1957, when Interstate 10 bypassed Livingston Parish, Westwego lost most if its commercial development but continues to attract people with its rich cultural heritage - including music festivals such as Vintage Western Days & Renaissance Faire each year - as well as its beautiful landscape that includes rolling hills and many cotton plantations dating back to antebellum times.

Westwego is a small town located in Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana. Westwego was founded on December 12, 1803 by Captain John C. Lee and his wife Elizabeth Webber. The original post office in the town was called "Henderson." Henderson was renamed "Westwego" on February 8, 1824 by Captains George Washington Houston and Jacob Hebert. On October 1, 1829, the town of Westwego incorporated under the name of Lafayette Parish. In 1861, when Lafayette Parish was created from parts of Rapides and Jefferson parishes, Westwego became a part of Lafayette Parish as well. From 1861 to 1968 it was known as "East Baton Rouge". On July 14, 1928, President Herbert Hoover signed into law an act entitled "An Act to Revise the Laws Relating to Towns in Louisiana". This act changed the name of Lafayette Parish to Westwego parish for all residents within its boundaries including those living in towns that had previously been named Henderson or East Baton Rouge. The change took effect on September 1st and continued until May 30th of 1969 when it reverted back to Lafayette Parish again effective November 15th through January 7th due to lack of funding from then-Governor Edwin Edwards' budget proposal which focused exclusively on newly created parish government expenses such as new courthouse construction and streetscape improvements rather than providing any relief for residents who were already struggling financially. As a result of this process one-third (167 out of 566 total) of the population within Lafayette Parish currently reside within Westwego parish with only 34 residents living entirely within Lafayette Parish according to 2010 census data. However since 2000 there has been an significant increase in both residency rates within both parishes with over half (57%) now residing within either parish full time while only about 10% remain residentially inside WestweGO alone however these percentages are still very low when compared against other large UPNL cities like New Orleans or Baton Rouge where around 75% or more residences are situatedwithin their respective municipalities full time
