This law helped reduce firearm violence in America later that year. Despite this law’s success, some commanders still continued to use faulty equipment in order to restrain their troops. Westwego, Louisiana is a town located in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. The population was 9,542 at the 2010 census. Westwego is an agricultural community that has been around since the 1840s. The town was founded on the site of present-day Westwego Plantation by Isaac Goodnight and his family. In 1851, John Ladd purchased Goodnight's land and developed it into what is now Westwego Village. Westwego started as a small farming community with less than 10 residents in 1845. By 1860, the community had grown to about 100 people living in three churches and four homes. By 1870, the population had increased to 1,500 people and included a school and a post office. From 1890 until 1930, there were no new developments in Westwego Village; all of the original buildings were used for other purposes such as storage or housing during these years. In 1950, when Jefferson Parish was created from parts of Orleans Parish, WestweGO became part of Jefferson Parish. Since then, growth has occurred in both the village and the town: In 2000-2001 alone, there were 633 new residents added to Westwego Village; in 2007-2008 alone (the year after Katrina), there were 2187 new residents added to Jefferson Parish due to Hurricane Katrina. Today’s economy within WestweGO revolves around agriculture: The town has over 50 farms that produce vegetables and fruits; also major crops include corn (maize), soybeans (soy milk), cottonseed oil production (West Wegonea plantations are among America's leading producers of this product), cattle breeding operations (cows are raised on pastures near limestone quarries which provide essential calcium) as well as manufacturing activities such as building materials for local businesses and local homebuilders/construction crews throughout Mississippi Valley region

The new nation won its independence from France in 1812 and soon realized that it needed to expand southward if it were to stay afloat. In 1814, Congress passed an act authorizing President James K. Polk to buy 2 million acres of land in present-day Texas from Spain for $10 million. This purchase made Texas available as a new state and helped make America more powerful. Westwego became one of the most important settlements in this new state. Its location on the banks of the Vermilion River allowed for easy trade with both Mexico and Spain. The town also grew thanks to its strategic location at the mouth of a tributary of the Vermilion River which made it an ideal port for goods transported downriver by riverboat or steamboats.
