Westwego, Louisiana is a town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Orleans metropolitan area. The first French settlers in what is now Westwego were Augustin and Marie Lachaise who founded a small town on the banks of the Mississippi River in 1786. They named it after their friend and mentor, Saint-Jacques de Compostelle. When America gained independence from Great Britain in 1802, Westwego became part of the newly formed United States of America. The town's original courthouse was destroyed by a fire on July 4, 1803. In 1812, General Andrew Jackson moved his army through Lafourche Parish to besiege Mobile Bay and gain access to the Gulf of Mexico; Westwego was one of several villages evacuated along with other settlements near Pensacola during that campaign. In 1840, when Lafourche Parish was organized into two parishes—Alain and East Baton Rouge—Westwego became part of Alain parish as part of that changeover. In 1861, following Confederate raids into Union territory along the Mississippi River corridor between Baton Rouge and New Orleans during the American Civil War (the Raid on Liberty Point), George Armstrong Custer called for volunteers to help suppress Confederate forces operating in Lafourche Parish; many Westwegians joined him in this effort. On December 12th 1860 an ordinance was passed by the parish board designating “Monsignor” John Jarreau as pastor emeritus; Father Pierre Bourque succeeded him five days later after Jarreau had already left for Iberia Parish to serve as vicar general there effective January 1st 1861 due to health reasons he had been experiencing since October 8th 1860 while serving as pastor emeritus at Saint-Georges Church in Thibodaux (now Lafayette). Father Bourque served until his death on September 7th 1865 following a long illness including pneumonia which he contracted while preaching at Our Lady Of Charity Church near Thibodaux during Advent services that day; he was buried next to Father Jarreau at Montsou Cemetery outside Iberia until 1968 when his remains were reinterred at Mount Carmel Catholic Cemetery inside Iberia Parish proper within reasonably close proximity to both Fathers’ gravesite sites according to law then prevailing; finally removed from cemetery grounds by order of then Superintendent Drayton Waddle effective January 6th 1984 pursuant to “ Order No . 08-1984” which read: “WHEREAS some members of the public desire that Father Bourque’s remains may be removed from Montsou Cemetery so that they may be closertoIberia Parish School where their children are currently having their education; NOW THEREFORE BE IT ORDERED BY THE SUPERINTENDENT OF CEMETERIES THAT FATHER BOURQUE'S REMAINS MAY NOT BE REMOVED FROM MONTSOU CEMETERY SO LONG AS THEY ARE LOCATED LOCALLY UNDER THE DIRECTION OF THE SCHOOL DISTRICT AUTHORITY AND ARE NOT AVAILABLE TO THE PUBLIC FOR SALE OR DISPOSITION”
