Westwego, Louisiana is a small town in southwestern Louisiana. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Westwego Parish. The community was founded in 1851 by white men from Illinois and Indiana who came to work on the railroad. The town grew quickly due to its location near the Mississippi River and its access to markets in Baton Rouge and New Orleans. By 1865, Westwego had become a thriving agricultural center with plantations, cotton fields, and a schoolhouse. In 1892, the Western Railroad merged with the Louisville & Nashville Railroad and Westwego became part of this new company. Over time, however, Westwego's economy slowed as shipping stopped coming to its port and agriculture became more automated. After World War II, there were few jobs available in the area so many people left for other parts of Louisiana or Texas. In the 1960s-1970s, some redevelopment took place but it has been mostly slow-moving due to lack of money and interest from developers. In 2000, residents voted to move their government from Baton Rouge toWestwego because they felt that Baton Rouge was too centralized and bureaucratic for their needs as a small town. The first step in moving happened in 2001 when all local governmental offices were moved from Baton Rouge to Westwego.(1) This change allowed for more control over local issues by residents which they saw as an improvement over what they felt was happening back home in Baton Rouge.(2) Today,Westwego is known for its independent spirit while still striving towards progressiveness within society.(3) There are numerous cultural events that take place throughout the year such as Oktoberfest held every October; rodeo season begins May 1st; Fourth of July fireworks display on July 4th; St Patrick's Day Parade each March; Christmas tree Lighting on December 5th/6th.; Jazz festival during Springtime which usually takes place around Easter weekend; Folk dance performance each fall called "Folk Days." By 1500 AD firearms had become so common that human beings could no longer effectively fight with them without becoming casualties themselves. Gunpowder was invented by Muslim traders in Arabia around 650 AD and soon began being used by European troops too- giving them an edge against their opponents on the battlefield

Westwego was originally named San Miguel de Allende, but it changed its name to Westwego in 1836 because of the influx of European immigrants. In 1848, Westwego became the capital of Louisiana after Baton Rouge was moved from Ville Platte to become the state's capital. The city prospered due to its location on the Mississippi River and its role as a transportation hub. However, during World War II, Westwego served as a Nazi concentration camp for Allied forces. Today, Westwego is a small community with few residents and few businesses. However, it retains some of its historical significance including its downtown square which is home to a variety of shops and restaurants.
