Westwego is a town located in the parish of Westwego in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. The population was 2,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Orleans–Metairie–Bogalusa Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what is now Westwego was James Fenton who came to the area in 1815 from Baton Rouge. In 1827, Captain John Denny and his men founded a trading post near modern-day Chalmette on the east bank of the Mississippi River opposite St. Bernard Parish. This site became known as Denny's Post or Fenton's Landing because it was from here that traders brought goods upriver to New Orleans and other parts of Louisiana before being sold off or delivered by boat overland to their final destination on Bayou Lafourche or elsewhere on the Mississippi River system. In 1846, when New Orleans was moved from its original location to its current location withinJeffersonParish, part of what is now Westwego was included within that new boundaries. The following year saw another move when East Baton Rouge Parish was created out of portions of neighboring Livingston and Rapides Parishes including much of what is now Westwego Township and most importantly Chalmette (now called Belle Chasse). A portion of this new parish also included present-day Jackson Village which lies along Interstate 10 just south of I-10 exit 30A (US 20 Bus.), east/west Streetscar Boulevard, Boulevard des Allemands (now called Boulevard de la Grande Chaumière), Garden District Cemetery, Elysian Fields Cemetery, Sugar Plantation Plantation and many other parcels dating back to pre- revolution French land grants which were originally issued for plantations near Mobile Bayou Saint John where sugarcane still thrives today as a result of recent acreage purchases by several sugar companies including cane farmers Edwin Latta Jr., Maurice Peeters Sr., Terence Donovan and others Westwego began as an agricultural community with cattle ranching becoming an important industry after railroads arrived in the area during Reconstruction era beginning in 1865. Today, some major businesses existing within or close to Westwego include Verizon Wireless; Tulane University; Southeastern Louisiana University; Thibodaux College; United States Marine Corps Air Station Miramar; Lamar State Park - home to two NFL teams LA Rams & Houston Texans

Westwego is a town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 9,562 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Baton Rouge metropolitan area. Westwego's history dates back to 1815 when it was named for General Andrew Jackson and his brother-in-law, James K. Polk. The town was founded on land that had been donated by General Jackson and his wife, Rachel Dole Jackson. In 1821 the first courthouse in Westwego was built and the first courts were held there until 1830 when they moved to Thibodaux because of problems with space. In 1836 Westwego became the county seat of Jefferson Parish after Thibodaux was hit hard by Hurricane Katrina; however, services continued to be provided by the Vieux Carré Post Office which still stands today on North Main Street near East High School. In 1840 Representative John Auld from New Orleans filed a bill in Congress to create a new parish called Lafourche in order to help supportWestwego during its time as an independent town; however, this legislation never came about due to lack of support from then-Governor Andrew Johnson who instead worried about taking advantage of Lafourche’s resources without considering its needs). In 1849 Representative Hatton introduced another bill which would have consolidated all parishes into one but this too failed to gain traction due largely to strong opposition from then-President Franklin D. Roosevelt who saw it as an opportunity for him to expand national control over local government). Finally in 1850 Representative Edmund Randolph introduced a bill that would annex Thibodaux into Jefferson Parish but this also failed because no one wanted their homes taken away - also contributing factors were increasing competition between adjacent towns for jobs and tax revenue) In 1870 Congressman John Lewis (D-LA) introduced a bill providing for western education within newly acquired territory including Lafourche so that “the children of our fathers may become citizens with all rights enjoyed by citizens of other states” However this measure too passed without much fanfare since most people felt westward expansion should only occur where there was value Pipe Line Railroad construction or minerals being extracted and not through ceded land randomly given out like Lafourche did) The original post office building still standing on North Main Street now houses many businesses such as sporting goods store Rite Aid and Big Lots while also serving as storage for city police departments along with occasional concerts/movies at the nearby theatre district known as West Hollywood Park
