It is part of the Baton Rouge Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area now known as Westwego was first settled by Acadians who arrived in 1765 fromCanada. In 1802, an act of Congress designated what are now Lafayette and Jefferson Parishes as areas for military barracks on the frontier between America and Mexico. The parishes were renamed Westwego in 1803 to honor General James Wilkinson (1758-1831), who had been a general during the American Revolution and served as Postmaster General under President George Washington. From 1830 to 1840, the town was home to two U.S. Senators: John Pemberton (1829-1840) and Francis Fenton (1820-1864). A school named after Wilkinson was built in 1834; it closed in 1962 due to budget cuts by then Superintendent of Schools Edwin Dukes. In 1860, when Lafitte left his base at Biloxi for good, he took with him about 20 men and their families to live permanently in what is now Westwego. After some time living among Indian people thereabouts before being taken into custody by French authorities on July 9th 1795 following his uprising against British rule over Acadia—the only such action ever recorded by English colonial authorities—the men were transported back eastward aboard HMS "Devonshire" where they remained until January 1796 when they disembarked at Portsmouth Point on New England's Cape Ann Peninsula under Lt.-Governor John Montresor's command because they could not be held any longer without assistance from France or Britain respectively which would have resulted in their execution if discovered by either power; however these events never transpired as Montresor learned of their plans and abandoned them instead at Portsmouth Point before sailing back up Narragansett Bay bound for Boston which he reached on January 3rd 1800 accompanied only by four privates including Benedict Arnold who had earlier assisted him while also serving as colonel of horse militia forces loyal to Americans during the Revolution In 1836–38 Lafitte again ventured out beyond Gulfport along Mobile Bayou where he engaged various Native American tribes headlong battles fought mostly with bows and arrows rather than firearms resulting eventually in two fatalities each side with Lafitte becoming self styled "King of alligators." His behavior has been chronicled through stories told down through generations including one noted local man who once said "Lafitte loved nothing more than war." Many years later author Rufus King wrote: "It must be remembered that this account...was given long after Lafitte's death...he may have been able to forget many things that happened during those trying days." It should also be mentioned that this particular account does not reflect accurately either events leading up to or subsequent fighting between Indians and whites within Colleton County - an event that still remains highly relevant today! In 1840 Drury opened his medical practice here providing care for both white patients and black slaves working inside parish boundaries.. Drury would remain here until his death aged 87 years old on October 12th 1902 Drury Street runs parallel across downtownwestwego annexation date unknown
