Westwego, Louisiana is a small town in the parish of Westwego in Orleans Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 1,819 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Orleans–Metairie–Bogalusa Metropolitan Statistical Area. In 1837, General John C. Breaux founded Westwego on a bluff overlooking Baton Rouge Bay and named it after his father-in-law, Lafayette County Judge James W. Westwego. The first permanent settler in what would become Westwego was Solomon Block who arrived in 1838 from Illinois. He built a cabin on the bluff and raised livestock until 1840 when he moved to what is now Elm Street and Indian Road. From there he began to trade goods with local Indians and purchase land for farming purposes which he divided into lots and sold to pioneers including Elias Boudreaux (1814-1884), Isaac Neeples (1815-1898), David Kearny (1792-1864), George Caton (1800-1868), William Hennepin (1789-1860) and others who soon founded villages near present day Elm Street and Indian Road: blockhouse Village, catfish Village, rice village, cotton plantation village and sugar plantationsvillages among others. In 1847 David Fenton established an Academy at what is now Frenchman's Avenue/Hwy 81 south of where future Iberia Parish Courthouse now stands as well asangel second Baptist Church which served as both schoolroom/church hall during Reconstruction days while also serving as home to various businesses such as J T Dunn & Son millinery store etc., post office from 1865 to 1875; First Baptist Church which served from 1865 until its destruction by fire about 1955; Frenchmen’s Store operated by G E Sellers from 1862 until about 1870; Eastwood Sawmill started operations about 1865 but did not continue operation after closure due to lack of customers; First Presbyterian Church constructed in 1889 replaced earlier wood frame structure destroyed by fire in 1894; Post Office closed about 1975 In 1925 Jean Lafitte donated 8 acres east of present day Elm Street for use as a park that still remains today called Lafitte Park located just east of Highway 78 exit 129A off Old Metairie Rd./Highway 84A
