On July 18, 1892, Westwego Rifle and Pistol Club was formed. It was the first rifle and pistol club in Louisiana. The purpose of this organization was to equip its members with the best firearms available and to shoot at local targets. In 1896, the society organized a field trial for new pistols using .22 caliber bullets. This event marked the beginning of what is now known as the "Pistol Season." From 1896 through 1898, Westwego Rifle and Pistol Club held annual meetings at which new pistols were introduced and tested. In 1907, Westwego Rifle and Pistol Club changed its name to The Louisiana Rifle Association (LRA). In 1911, it merged with Baton Rouge Rifle and Pistol Club to form The Baton Rouge Gunsmiths Association (BRAG). The LRA continued operation until 1965 when it merged with The National Arms Showcase of Louisiana Incorporated to become The Louisiana Firearms Museum & Research Center (LFMRC).
Westwego is a city in Rapides Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 9,569 at the 2010 census. It is the parish seat of Rapides Parish. The land that now makes up Westwego was first settled by the Caddo Indians in 1768. The region became part of the French colony of Louisiana after it was acquired from Spain in 1803. In 1836, Westwego joined the Union as a result of the Kansas-Nebraska Act and lost its slaveowning status. Afterward, it became an agricultural center with cotton plantations and small farms until it became an industrial center with heavy manufacturing during World War II. Since then, Westwego has been home to numerous businesses including two universities and one hospital. The city's economy has diversified over time as manufacturing has declined and service industries have increased such as health care and retail services. With new development projects currently being planned or under consideration for the area around Interstate 10 (I-10/US 90), such as a major mixed use project called "New Westwego" which would include office and hotel space on top of a shopping mall anchored by several large retailers, Westwego is poised for continued growth both economically and culturally throughout its history.

The troops stayed for three days and got a good view of the state capital, which they called "the most beautiful city in America." After staying there for a while, the troops returned home and never visited Westwego again. During the Civil War, Westwego sided with Confederate forces. However, due to its small size and lack of weapons, no one in town fought against Union forces. In 1865, after the war ended,Westwego became part of the newly formed state of Louisiana. It has remained an agricultural community ever since. Today, Westwego is a small village with a population of around 350 people. Its economy depends mainly on agriculture and fishing activities. It also has a few businesses that provide services such as tourism or goods to local customers. There is also an old schoolhouse that serves as a museum open to the public every day from 9am to 3pm.
