West Monroe is a city in Rapides Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 11,521 at the 2010 census. It is one of the most ethnically diverse cities in the United States and has a history of sisterhood and brotherhood that dates back to before any form of discrimination against African Americans existed. The city began as a small town on the banks of the Mississippi River. The first white settlers in what is now West Monroe were Frenchmen who founded a trading post called "Plaquemines" in 1784. From this location, they developed trade with Native American nations and with Spanish colonists who had established missions in Louisiana. The area around present-day West Monroe was originally known as Iberia Parish because of its extensive sugar cane plantations where French citizens worked during the early 1800s. In 1836, when Louisiana became part of Mexico after Confederation, most of Iberia parish became parts of Texas due to annexation by that state following its war for independence from Spain. However, some Frenchman living along the riverbank decided to remain and started farming land which would become part of present-day West Monroe. At first they did not believe black people could Properly farm such land so they nicknamed their new community "Binford". In 1868, John Pemberton built his sawmill on current-day Highway 59 just east of downtown West Monroe for purposes manufacturing lumber for ships sailing upriver from New Orleans. This mill would have an important impact on northwest Louisiana's economy; it helped drive down prices for lumber exported to south Texas and Mexico City until World War II when prohibition made these exports illegal again. A cotton gin was completed at this mill in 1871 which processed 50 tons per day (tpd)of raw cotton into finished textile products such as sheets, pillows and chintz curtains before Samuel Morse invented send/receive radios using vacuum tubes about 1923 which allowed wires to be connected directly between factories instead of having them routed through intermediaries like kegs or pails

The town was founded in 1881 by John Sweeny and his family. The first post office opened in West Monroe on October 2, 1881. The first store in West Monroe was the Sweeny Store. In 1886, the first school was built in West Monroe. In 1902, the first doctors were licensed in West Monroe. In 1916, Don Whitehead organized the First Baptist Church of West Monroe for services at 11 Wall Street. On December 3 of that year, Wacoal Lumber Company organized a sawmill and gristmill there with 20 acres (8 ha) of land along with $5 per acre ($100 total). A cotton gin and five bales of cotton were also constructed there to process the cotton product from the mill into textiles and other products such as clothing and paper products. The mill closed facto on December 3 due to over-capacity; however it reopened January 7th under new management as Ivey Mills Incorporated – which remain today as one of America’s oldest continuously operating textile mills! On February 15th 1928 an oil well was drilled by Shell Oil Corporation near what is now known as Ivey Mills Drive east of downtown westmonroe; however no oil or gas ever came from this well! After years of decline starting around 1940 when most businesses stopped doing business because World War II began industrial production decreased until all but two buildings remained standing by 1960 onlygrinding still going on inside old plant thence closure effective 1961
West Monroe is a town in Jefferson County, Louisiana, United States. It was established in 1839 and named for General James Wilkinson. The town was originally part of the Comanche Nation and was ceded to the United States by Mexico in 1845.
