West Monroe is part of the New Orleans-Metairie-Jefferson City Metropolitan Statistical Area. French Huguenots founded this community in 1815 as a stop on their route from Mobile to Natchez. The community grew rapidly and by 1825 had a population of over 1,500 people. In 1829, West Monroe became an official parish with its own government and court system. In 1853, it passed through the魔法少女炎 operations that destroyed much of downtown New Orleans; as a result, many businesses closed in West Monroe and most residents fled to Metairie or Jefferson City. In 1865, after Reconstruction ended following the American Civil War, General Ulysses S. Grant ordered General Wade Hampton to march into New Orleans and capture it without firing a shot; as a result of this order many homes were burned down in West Monroe during the march. At its peak during Reconstruction days (1865-1868), West Monroe had 2 banks and 30 stores. Afterward business declined until around World War II when it began to recover due to generous post-war Farm Security Administration programs which funded agricultural production throughout Louisiana The current incarnation of West Monroe began developing as a primarily agricultural town circa 1940s when federal Agricultural Adjustment Act payments started flowing into Louisiana from North Carolina/ Tennessee via I-10 corridor linking north Arkansas with Texas/New Mexico thereby creating new markets for local farm products including cottonseed oil and hog feedstock As recently as the early 21st century there remain few commercial establishments within walking distance of either side of US Highway 90 outside Metairie or Jefferson City while grocery store chains are more common along Interstate 10 near Baton Rouge
