West Monroe, Louisiana is a town located in Rapides Parish, Louisiana. The population was 10,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Orleans–Metairie-Bogalusa Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1827 and named for General John C. West. The first post office in West Monroe was established on December 5, 1827, by Major James Hogg. The present courthouse and jail were built between 1840 and 1846; the jail is now used as a museum. In 1888, local resident JG White donated land to establish what would become LSU's Tiger Stadium. In 1922, the first school in West Monroe opened its doors to students from surrounding parishes. That same year saw the opening of the country's first movie theater - the Kress Theatre - which still operates today as a family entertainment center with shows such as "Thriller" and "Ender's Game". In 1933, WSM Radio became operational in West Monroe with a transmitter site on nearby Mount Carmel Hill. That same year saw also the establishment of its own television station - WWL-TV - which has continued to be owned and operated by CBS through various affiliates throughout South Louisiana ever since. On November 1, 2006, President George W Bush made an appearance at Nike's headquarters to celebrate their new Air Jordan 4 line that included models designed by renowned sneaker designer DonatellOBallerini (DOB). West Monroe is a small town in Lafourche Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 1,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lafayette Metropolitan Statistical Area. The ZIP code for West Monroe is 80601. The first Europeans to visit what is now West Monroe were French colonists who arrived in 1722 and named it " Versailles". A post office was established at West Monroe in 1818, and by 1828 had a population of 100 people. In 1836, General Zachary Taylor's army invaded Lafourche Parish and stormed the towns of Bruinsburg and Thibodaux before reaching West Monroe. Many of the inhabitants fled or were taken prisoner; some few chose to stay and fight for Taylor against Spanish troops under General Antonio López de Santa Anna who had landed on the parish with an army seeking revenge for Taylor's victories over them at San Jacinto and Palo Alto Creek. The town was burned down on October 25, 1836 as American forces moved into Louisiana after invading Texas two weeks earlier with orders from President Andrew Jackson to punish Mexico for its support of Texas insurgents. After Mexican independence was granted in 1821, all land west of Baton Rouge that hadn't been sold to US citizens during Mexican rule was acquired by France along with most of New Orleans territory including West Monroe which became part of the newly founded state of Louisiana on November 1, 1840 following a referendum ratified by voters in both jurisdictions combined. On March 14th 1890 Congress passed an act creating Rapides Parish within Lafourche County as a result of maps being created showing all ceded land southward as well as eastward into Rapides Parish since much of what is now known as Lafourche Parish lay within Rapides County when it was annexed by Louisiana. It wasn't until 1907 that the full name received from France - "West Monroe" - again reflecting its original location within Lafourche Parish despite later additions such as Pineville (in St Tammany) across the Mississippi River which became its easternmost incorporated city limits in 1901/1902 prior to becoming independent municipality separate from Lafourche County on January 1st 1912 having attained municipal status due to lack thereof elsewhere within Acadiana province following annexation by New Orleans Statehood on August 29th 1896 similar vote results also reported elsewhere throughout Greater New Orleans region whereby municipalities enjoyed statewide powers and authority pursuant to new LA Acts 2nd & 3rd session §§27-38 et seq.. Consequently apportionment between adjacent parishes based upon population size rather than township or rural boundaries had become increasingly skewed towards larger cities throughout Greater New Orleans region culminating with establishment / operation of municipally run oil wells spawning numerous suburbia located primarily around large metropolises such as Baton Rouge & Houston while smaller villages located predominantly around smaller metropolises continued throghout their respective areas until disbanded or merged into larger metropolitan areas following national recession beginning circa 2008 etc... notwithstanding sporadic efforts made over many years by individual parishioners (& mayors) localizing resources more evenly amongst their respective areaoperated village services comprising fire protection police ambulance transportation library etc... Notwithstanding these efforts various suburban sprawl has resulted)... In short: although not completely unique thereto...westMonroe former downtown core has experienced relatively little recent gentrification typical among contemporaneous U S Cities [otherwise]largely due to increasing commuting costs associated with large metros outside city limits
The town of West Monroe was founded in 1814 by the brothers Napoleon and Andrew Fenton. The town grew rapidly during the 19th century, becoming an important center for commerce and industry. In 1881, West Monroe was incorporated as a city. The city experienced success in its early years, growing into a major cultural and commercial center. However, over time the city's fortunes began to decline, and it eventually dissolved in 1991.
